7800go, 2gigs of ram battlefield 2 and YOU

with the recent announcement of the 7800 go for the XPS line, ive come to wonder how this is going to impact my bf2 experience.

questions first: any idea if there will ever be a 512mb version of the 7800go avail for laptops (at least for gen 2).

and second: anyone out there playing with 2gigs of ram on their dell think that it gives a quite noticeable performance boost from just one gig?

i know in terms of sheer processing speeds the 7800 will be better then the 6800...but with games these days and in the future coming out with larger and larger texture sizes and other things, ram sizes should be playing a crucial part in future games...right?

...sigh

there isnt a single game out right now that needs more than 256mb of memory. Anand and Hardforums have done tests with 512/256mb cards. There isnt a perfomance increase.

512mb video cards for desktops are still new, I doubt we will see a laptop w/ a 512mb video card for somet time.

More ram does help bf2

I doubt they will have a 512mb 7800 in the next 3 months for a notebook.

You need more than 1gb of ram for BF2, at high resolution/quality the game eats at least 1.35gb of ram in 64 player servers with some vehicles. The more vehicles, the more ram you need. If you don't have 1.5-2gb then you WILL access the hard drive. Instead of a few nanoseconds for random access and a few GB/s in transfer rate you will be talking 8-10ms minimum and <50MB/s transfer rate. Hence, skippage. I put 2gb in my 9300, and after the first minute or two (while stuff is being cached in RAM) I never see hard drive access. In two words... DO IT!

According to German hardware magazine bf2 uses up to 255MB video memory running at 1024x768 4x AA/8x AF, F.E.A.R up to 280MB, 328MB at 1600x1200 which seems to make a few fps difference at the highest resolution with highest quality, maybe there is no need for 512MB cards yet but i would still welcome an option like 7800go ultra 512MB for my XPS2.

2 Gigs makes a big difference. My desktops 3Dmark05 is about 500 higher than my XPS, but the game runs as fast/faster with higher settings on my laptop. (desktop only has 1 Gig) Just can't run high textures without some stutter with a Gig.

The extra 256 RAM on the cards supposedly just make for easier running higher resolutions CRTs/LCDs. Doesnt enhance the game itself. So I hear anyway.

well thats exactly my point, i like to run this game at high res and preferable high detail...without the stuttering i see once in awhile that freakin gets me killed sometimes.

Id be walking along safely...then i see a guy running, i go to shoot, stutter and bam i get owned instead. or when i have to switch to pistol from the rifle and i get a stutter...bam dead again.

Ill do the 2gb upgrade after a little time passes, and as for some games not NEEDING 512mb graphics cards, yeah they dont NEED them, but games such as bf2 have already shown to BENEFIT from them.

The extra gig also helps alot on the reloading of maps. First load ,my desktop (10K Raptor) kills the XPS and reloading the same map the XPS is just a little slower. RAM speed also seems to play a big role in BF2 performance and my desktop is running @ DDR500 2-2-2-6 T1, but the extra Gig in my XPS over shadows it.

2gb ram will help - so sayeth the many BF2 folks with XPS2's

512 on a 7800 is a pipe dream, just because the cost it would add to the machine, no one would buy it. Ok some would but so few as to not be worth it. Now in 2007, when we have 64 bit games on Vista (remember 4gb of mem on Vista is like 2gb now), you might have more people who would be wanting 512 on the vid.

Not in BF2. In BF2 going from 1GB to 2GB will greatly affect the gameplay if you play on medium or high textures.
