DVD-CD Drive Problems r-31

Thanks to those who helped me with questions about replacing my HD on my TP-R31. It was surprisingly easy to do (I went from 30 gig to 60 gig for about $120). All seems to be going well except that, intermittently, when I open "My Computer" I do not see my CD/DVD-ROM drive. When I check the Hardware Manager it shows that the device is "having trouble". I have done the following (none of which have actually solved the problem):
  1. Re-installed the drive from Window's Update
  2. Searched for, found and installed the "latest" driver from manufacturer's Web site
  3. Re-installed the whole system (and all of the software (that was not fun)
  4. Restarted the computer
  5. Banged head against the wall
The drive is a Matshita SR-8176. It sometimes loads fine (which is how I can load and reload some of the software), but other times, not so much. I never had this issue with the old drive, and although there isn't necessarily a cause and effect relationship, I have gone back to the old HDD and haven't experienced this problem (although to be fair, I didn't use the old drive long enough - enough restarts - to make it a real test).

Any assistance is appreciated.

Hi Fireside! I wish I had an answer for you. I posted a problem with my T23 yesterday and no one ever replied yet. This website seems a little 'Dead' very little replies to threads. No one is ever in the chat rooms and over 50% of posted threads go unanswered. I am totally upset with my situation. I have a great T23 with no working optical drive. I ordered a cheap 24X and another new DVD-Rom as a replacement. I truly believe my original DVD-Rom that came with it is bad. I really need an optical drive working so I can upgrade my HDD to a Fujitsu 40GB/8mb cache and WinXP. Good Luck on your problem too.

I know that it makes me crazy when I have a problem and can't get advice, but hang tight. I did get two responses and they were very helpful (on my last problem).

As for the problem youmposted, I will check into it and see if I can offer some advice. Also, have you called tech svs? When my laptop was in warentee I got great response for them.

Doug -

It's a refurb from Overstock.com so IBM will offer no support. I guess I could get them to answer one question, that being if the DVD-Rom drive should have a (+) next to it in the BIos or not.

Will let you know how far I get with them.
