Hi All

I think I got a major problem here. I have a Sager 8890 with XP Home edition. The notebook was working great since I got it (Tuesday) but I powered the computer on for the first time today and it started to load then the nothing!! My Screen is blank except for a white cursor at the top left!! The computer is totally unresponsive. Nothing works at all. (I cant shut down using the power button, no keys work, but my DVD drive still opens and closes)

Anyone no whats going on or how to fix this!!!

Cheers

Not sure what the problem is, but you do need to turn the bugger off. So disconnect from the adaptor (unplug it from the wall, then unplug it from the SAGER). Then remove the screws from the battery cover and remove the battery. You could just let the battery run down but its probably better to cut it short.

Then, leaving the battery out, power up on the adaptor and see what happens. At least then you will know if there is a problem. If you can, try to open the SCU when prompted for that (its right at first). Check your SCU settings, then save and exit. See what happens.

If it goes into a coma again, unplug it again and remove the keyboard (there are two spring clips at the top you push out of the way to let it pop up). Its on a cable so you can't completely remove it. Ground yourself on something and then remove the EMF shield below the keyboard and look for the CMOS battery. Its a round shiny thing about the size of a nickel with a whitish plastic holder, there is a push lock to release it. Take the battery out and leave it out for 2 or 3 minutes. Put it back in, paying attention to the polarity (should check and note that before you take it out) and reassembly the machine. Fire it up again without the battery. Do the SCU thing.

If it still does the COMA thing, shut it down and get on the line to SAGER, you are most likely looking at an RMA.

Thanks for the reply. Well the problem has been fixed (I hope). Before I had a chance to do anything the battery ran out so I plugged the guy in and held down power for 20 seconds and it booted up fine. Hopefully that freeze was just a one time thing, but everything seems to be working fine now. Knock on Wood!!

Thanks again

Yah, knock three times and more. Hope it was just a nasty one of a kind event. But if not, remember those steps to reset the machine. Often that will do it. At least you hope so.

It looks like it might not have seen the HD for one reason or another. If doing the BIOS reset worked, it most likely was a controller/bios issue. Let's hope this resolves it for good.
