Ferrari S/PDIF output

How exactly does the Ferrari output S/PDIF? I am thinking of buying an amp that supports this format. Do I just plug a S/PDIF cable into the headphone jack? How can it output digital signal through the heaphone jack?? any idea??

It has a "dual" jack in the sense it is both a S/PDIF and a headphones/line-out jack. On the Realtek AC97 control panel you can switch the operation between No Output, Output Digital Only and Output digital and analog.

The bad news are that while the Ferrari has digital output, the Realtek codec (ALC250) only supports stereo (2 channels), so I highly doubt it is able to send 5.1 audio to the amp

thats ok though, this is for a headphone amp so I don't need 5.1

I am not a digital sound expert, so maybe my question may seem stupid... Would it be possible to decode 5.1 audio from dvds using just CPU?? That would make possible to send 5.1 digital audio to SPDIF....

Thanks....

The S/PDIF output on the 4005 works fine with 5.1 (and even 6.1; DTS ES,...) when playing DVDs, just select S/PDIF output to send the raw digital to your amplifier. You will need an adapter to get from the headphone jack to normal toslink optical cable (same as what you need with an Airport Express with AirTunes for instance; got mine for $2 or so at my local RadioShack).

That's good news! Too bad it only works for DVDs, but to each its own. Still I can't understand why Acer didn't bundle a more capable audio codec. It was probably a matter of a few cents.

Any idea what this adapter is called or where I can find it on the net? I have been looking, but can't exactly find what you are talking about

The name is something like "toslink to mini adapter":

pictures and prices (from $0.81 - 5.99)

http://froogle.google.com/froogle?pr...&price=between

If you don't already have a toslink (optical) cable, you can also get cables with the mini plug on one side and the normal/bigger connector on the other side (but some of those actually come as a normal cable + adapter so it is often cheaper to get a cheap cable and the adapter)

The headphone plug on the ferrari has a dual purpose; when you plug in the longer toslink mini jack, a red light appears and the sound is transmitted numerically in the fiber optic cable.

BTW: does the ferrari 3400 also have S/PIFD support??

some say yes, some no ...

any ideas??

Nice. Where exactly does this red light appear? Or are you referring to the optical signal itself?
