7oom issue

Hell all,

I just got a 700m and this is my first notebook, so I am not even sure if this is abnormanl.

In the bottom right tray, the "safely remove hardware" icon is always active.

When I click on it, it tells me I can safely remove my d drive. THe drive works fine, but I am not sure why this icon is alway on.

Can anyone verify if this is normal, or if its not, please point me in the right direction.

thanks

It's normal.

That's because the optical drive bay supports hot swapping drives. you can use that to turn the drive off, and then pop it out or switch it with another drive while the machine is running.

I had the same concern when i first my 700m, I was thinking they should have added a "safely remove motherboard" to the list of removable devices but it then made sense that the d drive was swappable

optical drive bay capable of hot swapping drives?! doesent that mean it could be.... ... MODULAR?! ...there have been many arguments on whether or not the 700m drive bay is technically modular, since it doesent have any accesories designed for it other than the cd drives.

700m uses a proprietary enclosure. If you want to replace CD/DVD you have 2 choices:
- order one from Dell;
- manually remove the proprietary enclosure from your existing drive and put it on the new one.

as of "hot swappable", I wouldn't even think about this,

It appears that initial design was not to include optical at all, an then they decided to include it as the "swappable".

I have a travel lite module to fit into my DVD bay. I can jsut remove and change with this funky little plastic thing therefore reducing weight when on the go if I dont need the DVD. It came standard with my 700m.

Wow, that's cool! Can you post a picture and Dell part number (or just part number)?

Must be really modular then. I couldn't find it on the Dell's site.
