Need Help With microATX and ATX

Thread Starter
Ok so I am looking to upgrade my desktop, and I have been getting mixed responses. I really am not going to be using it for much more then maybe hosting an ftp, and playing a game or two on it (bf2 mainly). I really don't want to spend a ton on it either. My current set up is:

CPU - AMD Athlon 2200+ XP
RAM - 512MB
HDD - 100GB 7200RPM 8MB Buffer IDE
Video Card - Some shitty 128MB one that came on it

Now it is a microATX system, so keep that in mind, and I really don't want to spend the money on putting a new case together with a regular ATX and new fans, dvd-rom, cd-rw, etc... So I am just going to upgrade the system I have. Unfortunatley I have been getting mixed answers, 2 of my friends have told me that it might have a few overheating issues, nothing that another fan can't fix but wouldn't make much of a difference, and 1 has told me don't do it, it will be a total waste of money and time. What I am wanting to do is:

CPU - AMD 64 3200+ or 3400+
RAM - 1024MB
HDD - 250GB 7200RPM 16MB Buffer SATA
Motherboard - A cheaper BioStar microATX board
Video Card - An Nvidia 6600GT AGP
Power Source - Up to a 500-520w

The person that said don't do it, said it wouldn't be worth it because the limitations set on it for being a microATX system. If anyone could give me some advice I would really appreciate it. Thanks.

Well, that's not true. You can actually get a good PCIe based mATX motherboard for ~$75.00 That would also allow you to get a slighty more future proof video card.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...d&Order=rating

But I think you should mention what case you have, since somebody said you may have overheating issues.

Thanks, it is an eMachine......BOOOOO i know. I hate it to but I can't fork out right not on something better, eventhough cases are relatively inexpensive I think that maybe towards Christmas I am going to start donig more building a new one rather then just upgrading.

um...why dont you get a normal ATX case...a few bucks...maybe buy an old one from someone on the forums or something even. A mATX emachines case isn't gonna like having that many componenets creating that much heat. i agree with your friend, you might have some overheating issues. Or just keep what you have and use the moeny you save towards the computer you plan to build around christimas

He does have a point. ATX cases are cheap too but can also fit mATX motherboards.

Besides, if you are upgrading the CPU, RAM, motherboard, graphics card, hard drive, and PSU, it really isn't an upgrade, but a whole new computer, right? You might as well spend another $50 and get a really good case too.

Or maybe I could sell the computer in general or parts and get 100 bucks for them. Do most cases come with fans?

booooo yourself I've got an eMachines with a PCI-e board in it myself so (this is the board I have in it http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...2E16813130485R )

the eMachines mATX case is one of the best mATX cases I've seen spacewise (not gonna get any overheating with them likely)

but most ATX cases take mATX boards (a couple may not have the mounts for them, but those'll be few and far between).
