Voted 2 - m6809, with cracked hinges, screen flicker, overheating problem after 6 months (fixed with replacement of thermal pad), random shutdowns at a year (no clue what caused it or why it stopped). I wouldn't be surprised if it lasts another six months no problems or dies tomorrow, but either way I definitely won't be buying emachines/gateway again.

I also feel like a dick for recommending the m6809 to a friend shortly after I got mine and before the problems hit. Since then he's also endured the random shutdowns, screen flicker, and an exploding hinge - he developed the cracks, but after a while his left hinge just gave out completely - thing disintegrated and sent plastic pieces everywhere, forcing an RMA, since it was kind of worrisome to have a laptop with an LCD hanging on by one hinge.

I was very generous giving it a 5. I have a cracked hinge and a USB problem but this machine has worked perfectly since May 2004. I cant even remember it ever crashing. Perhaps one of the reasons it has been so stable is that I have never updated any of the drivers I basically have left it as it was when it came out of the box. I have kept windows and IE current I have not loaded SP2. It has proven itself a great laptop that runs Autocad perfectly

I'm on my second, 5 out of 5 on both. No dead pixels, speed and battery life is good and no cracked hinges on either. I've owned a 6805 and currently have a 7405

Well, since my last vote, I have had to send the laptop in again. Emachines laptops are great machines as far as specs are concerned. Just can't use it for long because you continue to get the same problems over and over.

I've had my m6805 almost a year of heavy use.

Not problems or cracked hinges.

What app were you using to defrag the HD?

7422 here rock solid, no cracks, no dead pixels. Been taking it on tour and it survives the travel.

Well need to reply since my last post, Major problem!!!!!!! OsX86 doesn't go more than 1024x768 on my M6811 and via rhine not suppoted ethier! (sarcasm) Still running fine and kickin butt here even after a few roadtrips. Only hope Apple will consider releasing OsX86 for general consumption it is sweet. Here I sit deciding if I should boot WinXP 32 to game, WinXP 64 cuase I can, Linspire 5.0 to use the internet or OsX86 cause it seems so purty! So can I change my vote I'm really begining to dislike emachines for allowing me to have too many choices!

I thought I would just mention that my laptop is back, and it is defective again. powering down (seems to be a thermal problem), usually within 6 seconds of me pressing the power button, but when it does work, it usuually works for hours.

Anyway, to make a long story short, I missed the courior today, so tomorrow I Have to go down to the fedex office to pick up my replacement system. Corporate actually replaced it without much hassle. They didnt ask for a CC number, or anything, and they shipped me the new system before I even sent my defective one in.

I really wonder which model they sent me, because they told me it will be whatever they have in stock, that it may not be an upgrade, but it will at least be the same specs.

6810 been GREAT so far!! Purchased in Aug. '04. Yea I have the cracked hinge issue. But after reading the posts here I figured Hey I'm not going to waste my time and energy or emachines to replace something that is only going to reoccur. It does not have any affect on the operation of the machine, As far as I can tell it's it is a cosmetic issue. I have traveled to CUP races, Work related Job Sites etc. In and out of Airport security many times and have never had a problem.

My motto simply is: "if it ain't broke don't fix it"

Heck I'm sure I have flaws..Although I personnally don't see 'em. Why should I worry 'bout a hinge. They cracked after 6 weeks ownership and have never progressed any further.

Great PC IMO

Fairly happy with mine.

At one point it did have shutdown issues but they had disappeared completely after upgrading the bios and adjusting / tightening the screws that hold the cooling assembly. One of the four was loose and I think it was letting the assembly hang up and not sit flat on the chip. The machine would cool and a gap would be created. Then on power-up it would sense overheat right away. Had to replace the bios chip when it shutdown while upgrading the bios, but with the new bios on a new chip all is fine. Since the new bios it only shutdown twice in the first couple of weeks of using the laptop - I think the new bios is more forgiving with respect to processor temperature. After the second shutdown I then checked the screws on the heatsink and found one was not tight so I backed them all off and then tightened them all down in steps. It has not shutdown in over 6 months.

No screen flicker and perfect pixels.

Not bad for a refurb from Tigerdirect.ca

I have the M5405 and it has been the best laptop I have had in a while. It is upgradable and quite stable, despite having eval BIOS. No probs yet!
