As of noon EST, Dell will not sell the 7800GTX Go for the XPS 2 - Customer service essentially said "Want the new card? Buy a new laptop."

Some official announcement I was clearly left out of the loop could to care to share some kind of link? If you had bad luck with a recent call dont always base your information based one or 2 reps. Keep calling until you get someone who clearly knows what he or she is talking about. As for parts such as Videocards you might want to give spareparts a call instead of Customer service. Best time to call would be about a week or 2 when spare parts actually starts stocking the units.

Oh, I will keep checking back. Essentially, I called the support line to find out if I was out of my return window - and I am. They said "No biggie, just buy the upgrade card". Long call short, I ended up on the line with sales who said "Nope...no upgrade". That's when customer service came into the picture, and they said "Sorry, no return, no upgrade."

I'm only reporting my experience, not any sort of offical news - sorry if I was unclear.

How rude.

Two things I have learned from real experience and from this forum.
1. Dell customer service reps know less about Dell products than most people on this forum.
2. If you are patient and call Dell enough times you will eventually get someone with answers you are looking for and they will make it "all better".

Dell Promised XPS2 owners, "A graphics Upgrade when a card becomes available."
Since search is disabled I can't pull up the link. Its only day #2 of the release and today is actually the official real release day. I don't expect customer service reps to know much yet.

Bios update A04 on XPS seems to be for the 7800 GTX card.

Dell customers service...well you know.

It will be be for sale give it time.

What is the spare parts number anyone?

If Dell doesn't offer the 7 series upgrade for the Gen 2 owners, I will never buy anything from Dell again.

Regardless of Dell's 'official' policy, you will almost certainly be able to acquire the new GFX card via dell spare parts.

I imagine it will be similar to the acquisition of the MR9800 for the 9100 line.

a. Call and ask for an upgrade part for the 9100... Dell rep says "no upgrades".

b. Call and simply ask for the new video card... Dell rep says "sure".

Avoid giving your service tag; "I'm at work, and don't have it with me... can you just send me the part, please?".

Of course in the case of the XPS2 I mean XPSM170 the option will likely be available to us. Hopefully it wont be like pulling teeth like it was trying to get my hands on a quadro card for my 8100.

25% more is not quite what I expected from the next generation, hope it will at least run cool enough to do some reasonable overclocking, oh and hopefully we will be able to overclock without messing with bios.
The driver update for 7800GTX is already there at iXPS2 driver update site. Just a matter of time before they start selling to us.

The video bios is still locked. This card does seem to work fairly well with the autooverclock function enabled. It bumped the 3dmark05 scrore from 6697 to 6981.

swap and return

What about buying a new XPS M170... swapping cards then return it back to Dell with 6800 Ultra. If they notice then tell them you'll pay the difference ($349.00).

I had this same discussion with a rep last month about upgrading my XPS2 processor from 760 2.0GHz to 780 2.26GHz. He basically agreed that Dell would just charge for the upgrade.

I would hope Dell offers upgraded parts... at least during the first year of purchasing a new XPS.
Doesn't 'upgrade' imply that you get a new 7800 while they take back your old busted 6800u?
In that case I can imagine why Dell tells you to go buy new stuff... be it a new lappie or just a new 7800.
I would recommed (highly) everyone take a pill and mellow out for about a month!... Most of the sales and tech support people wont have any info about an upgrade option until a couple of day be for it avaliable...

It seems to me that it would be good business sense for Dell to initially try to force people to buy a whole new system. Cost is no object for some early adopters. After a few weeks, once the system is selling at discounts to mainstream enthusiasts at lower margins Dell wouldn't be cannibalizing M170 sales anymore and it would be easier to offer the card to XPS2 owners as an upgrade. They may even have limited the cards' distribution entirely to new M170 systems if the cards are hard to come by right now.

JMHO. Of course there's always the wool-pulling spare parts route in the interim.
