Z63a won't come out of standby

I've cleared the network card power management features; cleared this box on all devices that have 'Power Management' tabs.

- re-installed all device drivers from ASUS site, rather than using more recent ones from device sites.
No luck.

I open the lid screen is dark, I press the spacebar and there is 1-2 sec of disk activity, the screen remains dark and that's it. I have to do a hard reboot.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Latest Service pack for windows XP comes to mind....
Are you hibernating or standby?
Hibernate requires to press the power button.

all latest OS.
not hibernating (hibernating not enabled), just shutting the lid of the computer (suspend to disk-standby).

same problem...

I have the exact same problem and do not have the LAN adapter enabled. I've even tried installing just a bare OS with minimal drivers/inf updates - the same issue crops up.

Wow, I've been holding off re-installing the OS. But I did think that would solve the problem.

If this is an Asus problem, how come we're not hearing from many people with the same symptoms?

Too weird.

Would be very grateful if you could post or let me know if you find any solution. I'll do likewise.

Easy way to tell if there is something screwy with the os is to make a partition and install a dual boot. Install only the base drivers from asus and nothing else. The problem should go away. I have not seen this on a base machine yet so this leads me to deduce its user error. I have seen a solution to this somewhere before. I cant remember. It would be nice if someone compiled all of this into a huge library of cause and effect.

Has anyone figured out what's causing this? I'm having the exact same problem with my W3V. I've tried reinstalling Windows with minimal drivers, updating drivers, checking all BIOS settings....nothing.

Should I just RMA it??

Do you guys have the latest W3v or Z63a BIOS?
Maybe they resolved this issue.

Yes bios is the first obvious thing right up there with latest service packs. How about a check on t he checkbox for hibernation? This is not common to all of them. Most of them do hibernate/standby just fine. I alwasy say a fresh install with nothing but the base drivers no utils installed would tell you if a failsafe setup works fine. So it may be some soft you install or it may be a lack of it.

Yup,

installed all of the latest drivers, BIOS, etc from Asus website.
However I didn't pay attention to the order of installation.
Don't know if that could be a problem.
It's a real pain not to be able to close the lid of the computer.

Can you check the hibernaton box? Also are you running latest service packs? Is there anything else not working?

hibernation is off.
everything else works. The machine is totally stable.
OS is completely up to date.
I figure it may be the order of installation when I re-installed drivers from Asus website. However, I didn't test the standby function as soon as I got the machine, so maybe it never worked.

Asus tech support wasn't helpful.

If anyone comes up with a fix, I'd sure like to know.

In the BIOS, do you have "Execute Disable" enabled? If so, try disabling it.

DISABLING the 'execute disable' function in the CPU section of the BIOS has CURED THE PROBLEM.

I have myself to blame for this since the machine came with this feature disabled, but I thought it would be 'a good thing' to enable it. Of course I forgot I did this.

AuroraS: Very grateful for your help. How did you know this would fix the problem?

Well, I, too, own a Z63a and did a lot of research on it before purchasing...making sure that all of its "issues" were resolved. I saw several people complain about the Z63a/W3v not resuming from Standby... and someone on another forum suggested that trick.
Surely enough, when I received my Z63a, it was able to resume from Standby and I kept the "Execute Disable" function DISABLED in the BIOS.

Anyway, you're welcome; just glad I could help.

LOl
Well a bios update would solve this problem since new bios defaults to facotry settings but i am guessing you have the latest one. Should i guess that the rest of the posters were tinkering with bios and did the same exact thing? So then there was never a problem it was after all a user error? Thats sucks

Probably we all did the same thing.
But, the 'disable execute bit' is supposed to be a 'good' thing, and shouldn't break the system standby function.
So I'd say it was more a BIOS bug than a user 'error'.

I'm just disappointed that the fan is always on

I noticed that when I used PowerGear on maximum the fan was always on.
I uninstalled it and reverted to Laptop mode in the Power Control Panel and it adjusts normally.

Hmm... I'll give that a shot later.
Thanks for the tip
