i got the 1280x800 bright view which screen did you order? see but im sure the canadian preconfigured model is 1280 x 800 too, same screen supposedly. Oh i mean that the m40 pre configured is not available in america, which is what most people in this forum have been raving about good screen quality. The quality of toshiba screens seems very shaky atm. I fought and toshiba is letting me return the laptop because the screen is useless for me as a business sense with graphics and such. I also got a wierd error with windows last night and it didnt load, i had to reset it a couple times and do a safe mode which failed and did a auto reboot but worked on the reboot.

After i return this and get my credit back i might look into sony their new model just came out and is actually pretty cheap, 1600 around there not bad, must be revision 2 phase for laptops.

I got the 1440x900 screen. I do a little 3D modeling on the side for fun so I wanted a good space to work in. It's good that you were able to return it since it didn't meet your needs.

alright, as promised, I wanted to let you guys in on my screen. Though I ordered the 1440x900, I received the newer 1680x1050 screen they have on he M40 now. It's evident that dave's screen had issues, they can be seen in the photos, so here's what I think about mine.

Straight out of the box, I noticed only a slight lightness at the bottom of the screen, that becomes more visible as you angle it(no surprise, all LCDs look worse at an angle). Yes, it was there, but had I not read about it here I'm confident that I would have never noticed the diference.

Then I went into the BIOS, and found that the screen brightness has three settings, and the default was 'super bright'. I changed it to the middle setting and the problem vanished completely.

I took a few photos, all with the 'super bright' setting since that's the only way it will show up, to show the severity of what I'm talking about. first is straight on, then at a lower angle, and an even lower angle. the photos really are pretty bad, but it turned out for the better because black shows up as a dark grey and light spots show up really light.

As far as I'm concerned, whether I got lucky, or whatever, it's really a non-issue on my laptop.

My M60 is flawless, no problems whatsoever with the screen. I have seen many laptops and the only one here in Canada that remotely compares is the Vaio. But Toshies kill the rest, basically.

I will give props to Fujitsu also, those things have a lot of potential.

hi sor! i also have the screen problem...=( how do you get to the bios when start-up?
thanks

it's usually a matter of pressing the right button at the right time. I pressed F2 at the red TOSHIBA logo, then it prompted me to press F1 to change settings so I pressed F1. Their BOIS setup isn't very user friendly, arrow down to the power managment (not sure exactly what it's called but it' s something similar), then you can press the space bar to change settings, there are a few presets. Change it to 'User' and you can go in and change the backlight and processor settings manually. press 'end' to quit and save.

If it's really noticeable on yours though I don't know how much it will help... let us know. Mine didn't effect normal use at all and was only barely visible on a black screen.

thelostpatrol: Yeah, I think it's one of those things where a few have a problem, which makes people so sensitive to it that it really gets blown out of proportion. I would consider mine to have no problem whatsoever as well, really.

When I look at the screen straight on in super bright the blacks still look very even across the entire screen, it's really only as I angle the monitor away from myself(pics 2&3) that you can see it at all, but then again if I angle the monitor toward myself the whole thing turns bright... just an LCD thing. The technoloy has come a long way in terms of left and right viewing angles but not much work has been done on top/bottom viewing angles.

thanks sor for the instructions.. i tried it in my m40 but it doesn't make a lot difference...=( tried choosing the bright and semi-bright (the other one is super bright) but there is still this white wash on the lower part of the LCD..anyway, its just obvious when the screen is black...
cheers!

hey sor thanks for posting the pics, your site must be down i cant view them, anyways glad yours came out good i returned mine, i doubt that bios thing woulda made a difference by how bad mine was. I doubt its luck of the draw perhaps because you got the higher res one it isnt as bad. A lot of their screens have this problem on all the models i see in the stores.

I was working with an HP nc6000 at work today, and man, that whole screen was grey!! there were no blacks, it was like your pics, dave, only all the way up the screen. At least the screen was evenly matched though, but it made me happy with what I got.

Yeah honestly, there's a little bit of that on every notebook screen.

Don't get all upset over a bit of light--it's physics, bulbs do that.

ah i see the pics, cool sor, yah its a lot better than mine, also you have the matte finish maybe those are better, i think the higher res version definately has better light quality. Yah all hp's have that light problem, i dont know how people can tolerate these bad screens in their laptops. Gateway seems to be the only other manufacturer using good screens, not all their models but most of them, I saw 1 averatec model with good screen, thats pretty much it, in good screen i mean the same technology as sony uses. Can tell cause the light is like a filtered light or something, its wierd, kinda reddish to naked eye.

but yah at like best buy or fry's 90% of their laptops have taht light thing, most of them the whole screen like that.
