If the history of the 7K60 drives are anything to go by, the lowest price was $155 back about 4+ months ago and then they just shot right up into the $190s and above. So you might be waiting a while....

Someone asked for benchmarks? Btw, I've been running a 7K60 since they first came out and never experienced data loss, clicking, etc.

Here are some HDTach scores for the Hitachi 7K100 (100GB, PATA version)

Max - 56.8 MB/s
Min - 29.2 MB/s
Avg - 43.9 MB/s
Burst - 88.4 MB/s
Random access - 14.9ms
CPU utilization - 8.0%

Sony S270P | 2.0GHz P-M + AS5 | 1GBx1 | ATI9700 64MB | 7K100 100GB 7200RPM | WIFI | BT | 7hr.extended.batt | CPU undervolt | 4.2 lbs

does anyone remember how much was it to upgrade to one of these? I chose the 5400rpm 60gb option when i bought a few months ago, but I really regret it now :-(

can't remember how much it was to upgrade, but the 80gb and 100gb were options for me.

also, if you buy one of these, are you good to sell the HD your xps shipped with, or is is it better to keep it (i.e. will Dell service it with the new HD)

I wasn't even aware people were having clicking problems with the 7k100. I certainly haven't experienced it.

I remember it being around $300 for the 100GB 7200RPM upgrade, but then if you factor in your 40% coupon (not that they exist anymore to my knowledge) it becomes a much more palatable $180. I had a hard limit of $1800 for my system though including warranty, but otherwise it would have been a good value.

5400RPM drives aren't bad though, I still load BF2, CS:S and DoD:S maps before just about everyone else. And for storage, I just got a 400GB drive and put it in an enclosure, worked great (until the enclosure died, still need to get around to replacing it).

So did anyone buy one yet and get it. Once i hear that people are getting them and that they work, i'm ordering one.

guess ill be working longer than i thought today. Need to pay for it

Mine should be here by Monday. My current 60 GB 7200K drive does not click at all and I suspect that the 100 GB drive will be nice and quite as well.
