XPS 2 or Sager 9880

In 2-3 months I will probably be getting either a Dell XPS 2 or Sager 9880, at this point, does the Pentium M 2.0 (Dothan) match up to lets say a p4 3.2 ghz emt64 that I would put on a Sager 9880? Basically, can a XPS 2 run any game on max possible settings such as lets say Battlefield 2.

Pentium M or P4 64

P-M is just as fast as a P4, and it's made for a laptop so it runs much cooler and on less power. There's no reason not to get one now that they're matured and getting up there in clock speed

a 2 ghz pm is about equal to a 3.2 maybe 3.4 p4 in some games . Plus it has much better battery life and runs cooler

Just as a bit of an add on to the previous statements. The P-M is pretty darn fast. Also, the less heat you generate means less burning of the lap, quieter fans, better battery life, and often a slightly lighter notebook (since the HS/Fans can be smaller).

Thanks for the advice guys. Ive still got a few months before I have a chance to purchase a laptop, so I bet things will change by then.

id rather have a PetM then my P4 in ym desktop, its more effiecent

the major difference in those two cpu's is one supports 64bit. I would go with the p-m since i don't need 64bit yet.

Another thing you have to keep in mind is that these two notebooks aren't even in the same class. Its like trying to compare the porshe cayenne and a small sports car. If you plan on being portable, I recommend seeing both in person before you buy it.

I think the XPS2 is lighter & thinner than the 9880, if that matters.

Why u even ask?

Most notably you should inquire is by the time you want the machine both will have the superduperawesome Geforce 7800 Go

Yep, the 7800 for sure. Im leaning toward the XPS 2 by a lot so far. I think the Sagers have way too many heat inducing parts that can lead to issues that will develop later on, and if the P-M is as good if not better than p4 64, then there is no reason to get a bulkier, heavier, 1 hr battery, sager 9880 machine.

plus you get complete care for a nice addition

To be honest, I had this same dellima about 2 weeks ago. I was leaning towards the 9880 because of the TV Tuner, Camera, Microphone, 5.1 speaker setup, and RAID. However after reading through the Sager section, I started getting worried as I read several threads regarding the units frying or components failing to work. It's got a lot of high heat levels being generated from the P4 and GeForce6800Ultra, so to be honest, I was sadly not suprised of the problem they are encountering. At the time, both units would have cost about the same, so price was not the swaying factor. I still wonder if I would have gotten a rock solid Sager 9880 if I had went with them. But the thing that finally made me decide to go with another XPS2 was the dead pixel policy that Clevo/Sager enforces. They state that 90% of the screens have 1 or less dead pixels. That's not good enough for me when shelling out $2500 on a laptop. They do offer the 0-dead pixel option for $200, but why should I pay extra?

In the end, since I do alot of gaming, I think I made the right choice. Since I have been told the keyboard gets very hot on the 9880 during gaming.

However, I still wonder if I made the right choice since the Sager does offer a lot more for the same money. Who knows, I may still return the XPS2 and go for the 9880.

Yeah, I dont really care much about the camera/5.1/SATA, but I do care about the more battery power and what appears to be less heat related issues, ive read many posts about crap happening to Sagers within the first few weeks. I believe the Pentium M = less heat = less problems = more efficiency = more battery power and an overall increase in performance. I think you made the right choice to go with the XPS 2.
