600m vs. 700m

post #1 of 32

I'm thinking of buying a lappy either a 600 or 700 from dell. (waiting for that f***** coupon to come out ). Which would be better considering the aspects of weight, batt time, and price (gotta be below 1200 (Gotta use 750 coupon)). Also, the build quality and looks too. Which specs would be good? 1.86 or 1.7? I'm not too much of a gamer, so graphics card doesn't matter that much, an occasional game now and then, u know.

Maybe I could consider an asus, but those are expensive like hell, you see, I'm a student and I'm very poor right now (that is a reason I'm waiting for the coupon)

Thanx.

P.S. Can anyone make a guestimate as to when those coupons are gonna roll out?

Coupons might be back by next month, but I don't know. The 700m would definately be lighter and offer better battery life. If those coupons come out, you could easily price a 700m under $1200. I think you should get the best processor you can, but since you are on a budget, you might want to skimp on the processor and order as much RAM as you can.

just order from the outlet. that's what i did on both my machines.

everything in my sig was from the outlet except for my monitor which was used with a 45% off coupon. everything in my sig was for a grand total of $1787 including the monitor. You can't beat that!

my 700m was only $869 heck of a deal

yeah coupons might take a while =/ i recently ordered a 700m without the coupon because i got impatient.. i jumped on the 35% off coupon and only got about 600$ off, paid $150 more than i should've =[ could've used that for a gig of ram or 2.0ghz processor..

anyways, 600m does offer sxga+ which is great if you need a lot of space, but 700m has a longer battery life and is more portable.. personally i went with the 700m because i need a portable laptop with a very long battery life.

thanks, but what processor would be good? 2.13 or 1.86, is the difference that noticeable, I mean do you ever get to those speeds? Or is 1.7 very good?
post #6 of 32
It really depends on what you're doing. If it's just everyday work, internet, word processing, spreadsheets...processor doesn't really matter. My current laptop is a 1.0ghz pentium 3, it does all that fine.

If you're planning on doing stuff like DVD burning, i think it has to do with encoding so processor speed matters. Things that are heavy on the processor like burning, or compiling (compiling the kernel takes a pretty long time for linux users =[).

If you have money to spare, i'd go with the high-end processor, but it's not really needed. Even for games, processor isn't as important as GPU. I'd go with spending money on RAM first (buy it from newegg, like a 1gb stick, not from dell), then if you have money left-over upgrade the cpu.

I bought the basic processor since I want the best battery life from 700m. The biggest bottelneck of 700m will be its integrated video card regardless. Thus I'd spend more for DVD burner and buy RAM from newegg. DVD burning is not processor intensive.

They just increased the price of the 700m to "match the market" on the smaller laptops. When I bought mine, it was 1984 (regular price, plus I had a 750.00 off coupon), but now when I configure the same exact machine it is 2147.00!! Dell won't even honor the 1599.00 price that's in the catalogue for the 700m. We were told that if the customer argues the price, to just have them remove Windows XP to save the additional money!!! Good thing is that most of the people that come to the kiosk are the ones looking for the 299.00 computer (of course they also want a DVD burner, flat panel, wireless keyboard.....but only want to pay 299). Good luck. Oh, yeah and back to mine, I got the 700m (1.8 P-m, 2gb ram, 60gb HD, Intel 2200, CDRW, 2 yr warranty/2 yr complete care, Music match Plus, Remote for Dell Exp, No Office productivity or Internet Security) for 1234+tx.

Scott.

oh man you couldve gotten them to remove windows?! err there goes $80 or something.. o_O

yeah, right now 700m basic processor is 1.7 which is pretty good enough for everyday stuff and for your occassional light games (like CS1 starcraft..)

My 700m was $667 (before $50 RAM, $100 HDD and $96 DVD burner).

Sorry,couldn't resist.

P.S. Are you Richard Carver by chance? your signature looks awfully familiar.

So basically the 600m is out of the question? And also, would the keyboard (very small) and screen (Also small) matter? But also, the 600 is a heck of a lot cheaper, but I hear the quality is diminished too. so would anyone like to draw me up a good comp with specs? Post it here and I'll consider it. You can do it with the coupon (Hopefully comes out soon)

I wouldn't say the 600m should be out of the question. Tons of people hate because of how it looks and whatnot but it wouldn't have been around this long if tons of people didn't buy it. I considered the 700m but the small screen and keyboard turned me away from it. I had used my mom's 600m before I bought mine and loved it. The weight is low, the screen is a great size, it has a full size keyboard, and it has dedicated graphics which aren't the best but hey, I can run BF2 on it at low settings. I <3 my 600m.

600m is not out of the question.

Pluses:
- price;
- dedicated graphics if you are a gamer;
- 6 cell standard battery.

Minuses:
- ugly;
- obsolete.

The decision is yours.

For me 700m beats the hell out of 600m. But consider this: I am not a gamer and I have 3 more laptops.

Good luck with whatever you choose.

How is the 600m more obsolete than a 700m? Everything it has the 700m has. Dothan, 333mhz RAM, etc.

Actually, you are correct. Lack of the widescreen does not make a laptop obsolete. I take it back. Didn't mean to insult your laptop.

Didn't mean to come across as an a-hole or anything I was just curious as to where you were coming from.
