Starcraft was a great game, but way overrated IMHO. It managed to achieve balance between its three sides to a degree no other RTS has done (IMHO), but otherwise I don't think the game was anything spectacular.

I guess it's like chess. It's deep, yet simple, and not very flashy.

RON is OK. There were some things that I really liked about it, but it's got some things I find pretty stupid. I can't really give you advice on the best way to work through the tech tree. I have my way that works well for me, but a guy I LAN with does it a completely different way and we both progress at about the same rate. About all I can tell you is, try to wipe out all your opponents before anyone gets to the super-techs, which are available once you have researched everything at the library. Once two opponents both have the super-tech that allows you to produce units as fast as you can click them, you can easily wind up at a standstill. Your citizens are producing resources so fast at that point you're unlikely to run out no matter how fast you click up new units, so you wind up with massive army vs. massive army with unlimited reserves on both ends. It's pretty much pointless to play past that point.

I still like Starcraft best, even though I pretty much suck at it My second favorite is Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds with the Clone Campaigns add-on. I'm quite a bit better at that one

I would also give RON only an OK. To me the beginning and intermediat technologies were a lot of fun. But once you got up the technology tree the massive amount of troops you could make plus trying to deal with things like managing bombing runs, countering stealth bombers, and launching nukes - just seemed to make things a little too overwhelming.

Starcraft definitey gets high marks from me.

Wow, lots of good memories brought up by the discussion here. Dark Reign, AOE2, C&C and the whole WC series. All were fun at their time. It seems things broke down to a click fest and who could keep it up the longest, but it still was fun.

C&C was the first one I really tried to play head to head with multiple guys at work. Having bragging rights after a win was cool. The bad thing was that there were too many dropped connections when we tried with 4+ people. I also fondly remember dragging my computer over to a friends house to play WC1 via a serial connection. That was a blast too.

I never played RON or SC. Best one probably was AOE2, but the most fun was WC1 because it was the first where I played head-to-head against a buddy in the same room. Trash talking heaven.
