Problem with booting up a 5680.

I've developed a recent problem with my 5680. Only about 1 in 4 boot-ups with it are successful. Most of the crashes occur during the booting up of WinXP -- all either as hard freezes, or as spontaneous reboots.

However, sometimes the machine won't even make it out of the BIOS. Gets to the mouse detection phase and simply freezes.

All of the problems started when I flashed the new version of the BIOS put up a few months back. I tried re-flashing, but to no avail.

Is this a BIOS issue or a hardware issue? Obviously, I'd really like to avoid sending this machine back if possible...it's both home and work machine to me, and several weeks of downtime for anything but permanent failure would be difficult to manage.

But I fear that's what it's going to lead to, eventually. Any help, would be much appreciated.

So it hard freezes or automatically reboots during the Windows XP loading screen or when?

Actually, it's done it during the BIOS detect phase, the WinXP splash screen, upon reaching the login screen, AND after logging in and loading up the desktop.

It's as if it's running a gauntlet to get completely booted up.

You'd think so, wouldn't you? But the download of the new BIOS worked just fine, the flashing utility worked perfectly, and all the checksums came up green when I flashed. No interrupts or sudden problems. Either the program or the new BIOS would have had to be buggy.

You might try reloading Windows. It's worth a try!

When you flashed did the hyperthreading switch change? Were all the settings the same after the flash? It is likely the CMOS was wiped or reset by the flash.

I think this may be caused by the same capacitor problem that has been causing the missing ethernet thing. Mine started out with that and then moved on to the boot problem a few days later. Contact sager tech.
I know some people have already RMAed.I was hoping to see them post that they got there new one with no problems before I sent mine back but I may not be able to wait much longer.

yea i agree, it most likely is linked to the same ethernet problem.......my ethernet card didnt work, so i figured out a fix for it, but if i apply that fix to the ethernet card, then the comp freezes the same way this guys does, about 1 in 4 boots actually work, but if i reload my ethernet driver to the way where it shows problems, then the freezing doesnt occur.....i called sager and hey said they would send something to me which will cover the cost of sending my sager back in, i guess they lied cause i didnt get anything, im gonna call again today and demand a brand new computer.......

Actually double-checked the BIOS settings. Nothing drastic (particularaly the Hyper-threading switch) had changed after the flashing.
