AVG has a pretty good following. Why free considering most good anti virus programs are not that expensive ?

TIA

Norton Internet Security. I have been been using it since NIS 2001 and I have upgraded every year after that. I have never had any problems with it, always detects trojans, viruses, attacks, etc. It is an awesome program.
It also block ads, pop-ups, etc

Now, you only need that for a broadband connection. If you use a dial up then just use Norton Antivirus!

Turst me it is great!!

By the way it is not free.....Sorry. But well worth the $60!!

avast is probably the best free antivirus program on the market, or Antivir. AVG has slipped in recent years. And if you value your computer, stay away from Norton (unless you get the corporate edition).

Lucky me, I work for Uncle Sam, so he gives me a copy of the corporate edition of Norton. I think it is one of the best out there. I love it.

Yes and by your statement clearly some peoples opinions are better informed than others. But don't take my word for it, research it yourself, you'll find lots of information on google about it. Once you're done researching it, you can come back here and apologize

The problem with software nowadays is not that it is good or bad, the problem is that it has too much crap on it, they stopped making simple software that fulfill their purpose. I like Mcafee Enterprise, because it is as simple as it can get, plus for me it is free, plus I havent had a problem with viruses in a long time.

Check out Avast. This is what I use and it works great.

If you must go with something free, I have no problem recommending AVG. It seems to work pretty well for my parents.

Free is AVG

Norton Enterprise is good, Pandaware is the best for the home and small business. It kills Norton in everyway and are the most popular one in europe. And yes Norton is know to cause many issues; I've seen hundreds of machines work better once Norton was taken off, to a point that most of the techs I know won't touch a Norton product for their home computer. I'd see a Norton related issue atleast once a week when I was fixing machines.

Edit: I would use Norton Ghost for backups and possibly their partion software; but as far as any security or system tweak software I would keep it away from my machines.

We use Panda on our servers at school. It works great there, but I'm not a huge fan of there home products. I find it takes up to many resources, but it is simple to use.

Check out THIS comparison of many of the popular antivirus products on the market.

Avast! It's simple to use and highly effective. It runs in the background without taking up a lot of RAM.. actually I've played games with it on and it doesn't cause lags. It only runs at about 1,000K mem usage. Also, check this site out to do your own comparisons: http://www.av-comparatives.org/
Hope that helps.

I use Avast!

As far as ones you pay for, Panda gets my vote.

Another vote for AVG free.

I use both Avast and AVG. I used to not use any antivirus program, until I started downloading a great deal of junk.

I love the Norton line:
Norton 2005 is ironic - much like viruses, it brings down to its knees even the fastest computers! A true resource hog!

We forget to mention one thing, spyware...

www.hitmanpro.com

This little bugger will scan for virus and spyware, is free, uses 6 different engines to do the job and is my favorite util of all times.

site is not in english, but click download and the program has an english install. It will download everything for you and install all, you just need to click I AGREE when prompted. I only used the trend micro virus install option and all of the spyware scans... amazing how many it would find.

I'm downloading the free avast! tonight to take a look at it, whats one more?
