Google the model number of your hard drive and the spec sheet for your drive will tell you what the temp range is. You can use HDTune or Everest or Windows Device Manager to find the HD model number.

I think max for Seagate is 55 at the upper range for operating temps. Is that the first time it has happened?

I believe the spec is 55 max, but my guess is that is just a general guideline. I suppose if you're consistently hitting the high 50's for sustained periods, you might do some damage, but if it's just the occasional high temp, I wouldn't worry. I think mine hit like 58 while doing a full chkdsk once, but usually it won't go past 55.

I think as long as it doesnt stay at over 55 for long periods of time then your ok. mine hits 55 once in a while but drops back down to the mid-high 40s.
