wait for ubuntu breezy?

hey guys, i just got a new notebook and decided to install ubuntu on a partition (65 ubuntu 15 gigs windows =/ just to play some games natively). I just want to give it a whirl because I've heard amazing things about ubuntu and apt-get =].

well, I was just wondering if I should just wait for the release of breezy badger (sometime in october?). I'm concerned the update to breezy might be difficult..

thanks in advance!

There's no need to wait. Very few packages will be updated in the ~2 weeks between the latest Colony 5 breezy preview release and the final release circa mid-October. People haven't been having many problems with the preview at all judging by their forum traffic. Here's the link to colony 5 breezy isos: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/breezy/colony-5/

Once 5.10/Breezy Badger is officially released, you can manually upgrade all of your packages (apt will replace the ones that aren't up to date) by typing this in a terminal:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

I really don't see a difference between say Hoary and Breezy. So it's the packages that's been upgraded? Can't you just download the packages elsewhere? I viewed the screenshots and I don't see a need to go through backing everything up and installing the newest version.. Hoary alone has so many packages it's too difficult to keep track.

Anyone wanna convince me otherwise?

It depends what sort of software you want to run. You might be perfectly happy zipping along until your next graphics card needs a newer version of X.org, a program needs a newer gnome, you need a feature in the newer kernel, etc. You also have to figure that Hoary will be less supported once Breezy's released. There also might be security problems if you don't regular update your installation, but that might not be a big deal.

If things are going well for you, just wait it out till you feel the need to upgrade. Odds are that the problems people are having with upgrading will be fixed by then, anyway, and it'll be a smoother process.

Ubuntu Breezy configured speedstepping for me out of the box for 700m, but if it didn't get your laptop here's a link to that guide

And as for undervolting I haven't tried it yet, but here's the link:

Good luck!
