Do the math
If you compare the specs and pricing of the base M170 today with the base XPS2 yesterday, here are the results
Base M170 Spec = Base XPS2 ($2819) + DVD burner ($79) + 100G 5400 RPM ($59) + Security Software for 15 months ($79)
M170 Base Price = $2758 (

The comparably equipped XPS2 was $3036. So from DELL's point of view, this amounts to a price cut of $217.
You can downgrade to the same 80G HD that the XPS2 has and save $59 on the M170, but, at least online, you are stuck with the other two. Now it is hard to imagine not wanting the DVD burner (though some might prefer buying their own) and you do have a choice of McAfee, Norton, or PC-cillin, so it isnt that bad.
There seems to be a minor price cut in enhanced warranties too, but other upgrades appear the same as before.
If you apply the $217 against the $349 cost of the NVIDIA 7800, thats leaves an increase of only $132.
If DELL comes through with 35% off coupons, that will cut the marginal cost of the 7800 to under a hundred bucks. Hard to feel cheated by that!
This is only the first day, so let's give the marketing wizards at DELL a chance to incentivize us to buy the M 170 before we shed any tears.
For the record, I have a loaded XPS2 on order with the last $35% coupon.
I purposely delayed shipment until late October by ordering the back-ordered 100G 7200 HD. I will soon find out whether I can sub the M170 with the new price for no penalty beyond the 7800 upgrade less 35%. I doubt if I can but I'll let you know what happens when I try.
I bet within a month we see 30% or higher coupons on the M170 because few people will buy a loaded one for $4500 or more. The sweet spot seems to be $3000 (loaded) down to around $2000 stripped.
Please no flames...I only know what I read on DELL's site today and apologize for any errors in advance.
