They have Go 7800 GTX benchmarks over in the Sager board.

http://www.notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=109626

It looks like you can get to 7000 on 3d Mark 05.

Also, anandtech will have benchmarks in the next day or so too.

Yeah for upgrade!!!

Just called, they dont have the part yet. She offered the the 6800 go ultra and the Quadro FX Go1400. I gave her my number and she said I would be notified when they have that part in stock. She was also confused as to where I heard this information, and I said "on you website"
ill bet you $5 they guy you talked to in parts has never even heard of a "pipeline" or "fill rate"

First off I'm glad the upgrade will be available for my XPS.

Secondly though, I have absolutely no use for this card at the moment. There isn't a game or program that doesn't run at more than acceptable speeds and quality. There isn't a game out that we have that the current XPS systems can't run perfectly well. Why would I want to pay $450 more so I can get 115fps instead of 85fps? Hell I have money to blow and still don't see any need what-so-ever to upgrade to the 7800 in the near future.

Now, having said that, next year about this same time or a few months later I could see where new games may come out that could use the extra muscle and then, and the price will also be more appropriate for what it offers. As far as this card helping my gaming out right now, can't see it.

Ever heard of DOD:S ?

That's the whole reason I'm going to jump all over this upgrade.

Do the math

If you compare the specs and pricing of the base M170 today with the base XPS2 yesterday, here are the results

Base M170 Spec = Base XPS2 ($2819) + DVD burner ($79) + 100G 5400 RPM ($59) + Security Software for 15 months ($79)

M170 Base Price = $2758 (http://configure.us.dell.com/dellsto...iMX170S1&s=dhs)

The comparably equipped XPS2 was $3036. So from DELL's point of view, this amounts to a price cut of $217.

You can downgrade to the same 80G HD that the XPS2 has and save $59 on the M170, but, at least online, you are stuck with the other two. Now it is hard to imagine not wanting the DVD burner (though some might prefer buying their own) and you do have a choice of McAfee, Norton, or PC-cillin, so it isnt that bad.

There seems to be a minor price cut in enhanced warranties too, but other upgrades appear the same as before.

If you apply the $217 against the $349 cost of the NVIDIA 7800, thats leaves an increase of only $132.

If DELL comes through with 35% off coupons, that will cut the marginal cost of the 7800 to under a hundred bucks. Hard to feel cheated by that!

This is only the first day, so let's give the marketing wizards at DELL a chance to incentivize us to buy the M 170 before we shed any tears.

For the record, I have a loaded XPS2 on order with the last $35% coupon.
I purposely delayed shipment until late October by ordering the back-ordered 100G 7200 HD. I will soon find out whether I can sub the M170 with the new price for no penalty beyond the 7800 upgrade less 35%. I doubt if I can but I'll let you know what happens when I try.

I bet within a month we see 30% or higher coupons on the M170 because few people will buy a loaded one for $4500 or more. The sweet spot seems to be $3000 (loaded) down to around $2000 stripped.

Please no flames...I only know what I read on DELL's site today and apologize for any errors in advance.

sweet, looks like I found something to purchase as soon as i get a job. ( in addition to a bowflex machine and an elliptical trainer)

I wonder what the ETA is on the 7800 as a spare part that everyone can order. I guess it would be worthless to call right away since their tech support is unaware that the card is even released.

Question for me: How much does it Improve Battery Life? If any.
If it does improve it a decent ammount I could possibly convince my wife that I "Need" it. Otherwise I will be getting it in a year or so for reasons which you describe. If its $350 above the Go6800 Ultra at the factory then its going to be atleast $499 for it current owners upgrade.

To all the new/current owners that upgrade.

Hmm, the difference between the 7800 GTX Go and the 6800 Go Ultra seems to be even less than the difference between the 6800 Go vanilla and 6800 Go ultra.

I'm fairly disappointed in the 7800 GTX Go's performance. Judging by benchmarks of desktop 7800 parts, I was expecting a similar performance increase.

All of my thoughts are currently based on the benchmarks of the 9890 over in the Sager section.

Edit: I think the price for the 7800 GTX Go part from Dell will cost $600-$750.

Hmmm...hate to say it to those who argued with me earlier on about the XPS2 and 9300 getting the GeForce go7800. I argued that it was just not feesible for the 9300 to get this upgarde and I get bashed and flamed on harsh...for those "idiots in the know" ->.....TOLD YOU SO!

How do you like them apples?!?!

By the way, if you want the card, it will be roughly $1000+ CDN...ouch

Well, if you look at the BF2 benchmark there is a pretty large difference. I'm guessing that the other benchmarks are limited by the CPU.
The biggest difference with the 7800 should be seen at native resolution gaming (1920*1200 with and without AA). The new cards have been optimized to work above 1600*1200, unlike the 6800 which sees a substantial drop-off above that resolution. Those Sager benchmarks are borderline worthless (not surprising -- seems habitual with notebook reviews -- but annoying given that they went so far as to overclock the cards but then didn't stress them).

Here's hoping for a more informative review soon... from somewhere.

I argued that I was going to be able to put a 7800 go in my laptop, so 9300's will be able to have the option....and that has yet to be proven otherwise.

You are correct Sir! We all knew that the new xps was going to have the card, nothing has been said, implied or otherwise, that the 7800 won't work in an i9300.
