Xps2 Change Name To Xps M170!

Arrive at work at 6:30am this morning and went str8 to Dell website to check out the new Xps M170. Wow the price is up to 4 grand, thats for the top of the line Xps M170, now for the all around performance it is around $2800, i think. It's exactly like the Xps2 every single aspect such as the processor, video card, screen, blah blah blah ya get the point. Then when I went to the notebook selection section there was no Xps2 on there anymore. So does this mean Dell change the name of the Xps2 to Dell Xps M170? Does that mean everyone who purchse an Xps2 still have Dell top of the line product without the 7800? Does it also mean that our Xps 2 now known as Xps M170 has an increase in value?

yes xps 2 's went up in resale value as dell has nearly stopped coupons and the base price has risen quite a bit

For the same system as i have now it would have cost me an extra £350 at the mo

I received my xps2 about 2 weeks ago, didnt use any coupons as we get ripped off here in the uk so there werent any.

We don't get coupons like they do in the US here (Canada) either. No 35% - 40% off, most I have seen was $200. But I spent an hour on the phone with them and got them to take the same amount off of it. Just need to know how to deal with the sales people.

I just a rebranding.. The M =moblile, the first 2 digit = the screen size and the digit = generation (0 being the first gen). so you have a mobile 17in. gen 1

This is a common marketing practice. It's to keep products from acquiring aged names or become overly confusing. While "XPS2" may sound a little simpler, from a psychological standpoint it loses meaning after a few generations. Users become confused about which is the "new" XPS (especially when there is a desktop counterpart bearing the same name) and lose sight of which computer they want to buy, which might lead them elsewhere.

Actually, the EA SPORTS studios wanted to rebrand the Madden Football franchise as "Madden 3" or "Madden 4" as to prevent aging of their product by associating it with a particular year. It's doing so well though that they passed on it.
