How does external drives work

Thread Starter
1. can i used it as a main drive or it can only be used as backup hardrive.
2. Can i instal games on the external hardrive and run it on the desktop like a normal program.

Sorry if this sounds weird, i've never used an external hardrive before so any comments would help..

If by MAIN DRIVE you mean "C:" then NO, it cannot - at least not without problems. I have never installed windows to an external drive before, but they do show up in the installation screen... so I imagine one COULD install it there, but the problem will come when BOOTING. Unless your BIOS supports booting from external drives, you will not be able to boot off it.

As for #2: YES, you can install and run whatever you want off of it. Be mindful of drive lettering, though. Re-assign your CD/DVD as X: or something (search these forums for instructions and reasons); this way, if the drive is removed, it doesn't mess up your letter sequences of other drives (CD/DVD, media readers, etc.).

No, you can't install Windows on the external drive. I already tried that. Even though it show the external drive on the installation screen, but when you choose any partition on the external drive, Windows will warn you that it can't install the OS on the external/removable drive.
