pageing files - Page 3

I would have to agree with downbyfive. I would uncheck everything except avgcc and avgemc (your antivirus) and NeroCheck (I think nero needs ths to work.) Click apply/ok and reboot. Test your wireless and your tablet functions. If everything works, then you're good to go. If not here are the other sets.

wireless:
pronomgr, zcfgsvc, ifrmewrk, eouwiz

tablet:
tabvserw

Also, don't forget to clean out your temp files: start -> programs -> accessories -> system tools -> disk cleanup

Empty your trash, update your antivirus program and run a full system scan.

If you're still having a problem with firefox, try uninstalling it and reinstalling it.

I can't seem to get lower than 40s after I get all the things on my computer I want. When I reinstalled it was in the 20s, but after wacom tablet, bluetooth, wireless, and other "stuff" it is what it is. I'm sure I could reduce it but not sure exactly how without getting rid of stuff I need.

Also, turn off system restore. Do this BEFORE your virus scan. If it is a virus, it may be hiding with the restore files. At the very least turn off restore and turn it back on.

Right click My Computer -> Sytem Restore -> Check the box -> Click Apply

Once it's done, you can turn it back on if you like (you might get a slight performance boost if you leave it off.)

Tellerve, just because you need a wacom tablet, wireless, etc. doesn't mean you need that associated programs and services that come with them. Do the same thing that cool68rtcharger has been doing with the msconfig. Turn everything off except your Antivirus and reboot. Test to make sure everything works and only turn back on what you absolutley need.

now on restart i have it to about 45 procsses thats alot better. and every thing seems to be working fine but a little more using to see for sure

also, stuff that loads on boot (that you arent using immediately just slows your boot down, though it can add 5-10 sec to the loading off that app -- for the first time you load it)

e.g. steam, openoffice, acrobat, office, etc
[noticed you had steam and openoffice, gonna guess you have acrobat

go to start>run> type "msconfig" > startup

Uncheck the programs that you don't need running when booting up XP.

I have 33 running on startup, for what it's worth.

What do you folks know about setting the priorities of processes in the Task Manager?
It seems to me some processes are taking resources trying to load even though they cannot load until certain other processes are finished. There seems to be no order to how they try to load, and setting the priorities of key processes which others are dependant upon would expedite the whole startup proceedure...no?
if you set the priority of a process, which is trivial, too high it will dominate the processor with all of its requests before any other process gets a chance to run. Leave the process priority alone. It can screw up more than it fixes.

There's why I don't F with startup processes too much. I don't care about the number, I care about what they're doing. If I don't want something DOING what it does, I get rid of it. I don't concern myself with processes that are doing things I take advantage of in the meantime anyhow.
