no, i never said the majority of people use linux right now, but if games compatibility is no longer an issue, then more people will have the CHOICE to use linux.

MS has about 95% of the market and apple/nix have the remaining 5% divided up somewhat equally, depeneing on the statistics you look at.

The PC game market may not be advancing like consoles, but my money says it will be around for the indefinite future. For one thing there is too long a time span between the release of a new console system. During this time PC's are advancing on an almost monthly basis. This will almost always give PC’s an edge when it comes down to providing the very best gaming experience available. Second I suspect many people, like myself, would rather spend money on a cutting edge PC that excels at gaming as opposed to buying a console. Sure the PC will cost more but it can be used for such a large variety of tasks.

Everyone focuses on the hardware. There is a LONG time between good PC games. From quake 3 to Doom 3.....HL1 to HL2.....BF42...BF2 and the list goes on. With out good games...super hardware will only make your VISTA faster.

a next-gen console costs as much as your 6800 go alone. wouldnt you rather buy a console which you know will play any game for the next 4/5 years, and get longer battery life and a lighter lappy? you wont be playing games on a lappy with it unplugged anyway, and a console is pretty luggable. Also, the trend ive seen lately with BF2 and AoE3 is that pc games are degrading in quality a LOT.

There is a long time between good games that are essentially a new episode of a game in a specific game franchise - such as time between HL and HL2. However that is because it take a lot of resoruces and money to produce a great game and you don't want to release a sequel too soon after the original (as it would hurt sales of the original). There are, however, plenty of great games released every year for the PC and my bet is that this trend will continue.

Nope - I perfer to stick with my high end 17" notebook. I don't play a ton of games but I like to have the option to play any current PC title on my notebook. But to each his/her own.

BF2 not a quality game?? This is the most addictive game I've played since the original Civilization back in the early 90s. BF2 is worth more than the $30 CAD I paid for it...I would've paid a LOT more. I'm definitely getting my money's worth. When's the last time you played a game for 100 hours and still be addicted? I'm only on hour 21 but there's no end in sight for me...lol

bf2 was the buggiest sloppiest most unpolished game htat i have ever played(although i havent played many games lately, so maybe my standards are a little higher than yours). EA cares about nothing other than money and BF2 had some serious quality issues. It was a terrible release. There were a ton of bugs in the 1.0 and the developers went on a month long vacation right after the release of game. They had to hire some new ones to make a patch for it, which made it even worse than before. They then called the original devs back from vacation to work on a patch for the patch. At the same time, they recaulled the first patch so it was nearly impossbile to get into a game.

Then yadd in all the exploiters and the shitty hit detection and youve got yourself a crappy overhyped game thats not worth the dvd its printed on. Im going to reinstall it soon though to see if their latest patch has fixed some of the MANY MANY problems the old one had. Im also looking forward to playing some mods, because BF2 just isnt fun the way dice developed it.

well lucky me then...I just started playing it and patch 1.03 seems to work like a charm. It's never crashed once. I'd be pissed if the game didn't work out of the box, but I've yet to play a game that was as bad as you think BF2 was. Remember the game Messiah? Got hammered by reviews because it was so buggy...but it played perfectly for me and I loved it. I guess different PC configurations are to blame and I've got horseshoes up my ass

Driz...definitely get back into the game with the new patch...it works perfectly for me and everyone else I play with.

The article above talked about the market moving towards consoles, I wonder how much software piracy plays into this... I know that PC games are WAY easier to get your hands on and pirate, where you still need to buy a mod chip and stuff for the Xbox. Maybe that's part of what's causing less money to go towards PC games. I dunno, just a thought.

PC Gaming is already half-dead considering the rash of similar, dumbed down games, compared to the 80s and early-mid 90s.

at least there is MMORPG

As I said before PC games are here to stay. A quick walk through the software isles at Best Buy or Circuit City clearly shows this. Sure consoles are stealing some of the market but competition is usually a good thing as it will force the PC game publishers to work harder.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
This 'question' is debated and argued with every console release, and PC gaming is as strong as ever.

There may be a time when the differences between a console and a PC are one and the same, but that won't be this generation.

No, it wasnt just my hardware. I read on forums a TON of people were having problems with it. It was terrible. people weretalking about boycotting hte expansions and even making comics about all the problems in teh game

BTW, i was googling for the comics site and i found this one from new zealand, where they have major bandwidth caps on their braodband. http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y30/nrg_wp/comic3.jpg

Edit: this competition isnt good for anyone. nvidia, ati and MS are still making money off of consoles. They dont need pc gaming to stay alive, they are only compteting with themselves. Game designers arent worried about consoles because they develop games for both pc and console. They just support the system that makes them the most money. PC gaming will die not becuase it is inferior but because it isnt as profitable for developers. The only losers here are us.
