Can you upgrade your internal wireless card?

Have the Intel Pro B/G and I lose connection left and right. My old laptop had the Atheros A/B/G and that thing was just AWESOME! So my question being is, can I toss out the Intel crap and put in an Atheros or doesn't it work that way?

Absolutely!

The internal wireless cards are Mini PCI.
As long as you put in a wireless card that is Mini PC, it should work fine.

As far as connection problems, have you installed the newest drivers for the Intel card?
www.intel.com

You may also want to check the internal connection of the card to the two internal antennas [hiding behind a roughly 3-4"x3-4" cover with screws].

Hope this helps!

Thanks C9tech, I'll go DL the newest drivers and see if that helps then check my connections. It's strange because on my laptop with the Atheros card my connection was always at max or just below it and I never got a disconnect. Have a nice D-Link 624 Xtreme G Wireless router, and with this intel card the signal is always extremely low and lose connection a lot...too much.

That does sounds strange...

If the drivers do not help, be sure to check the internal antenna connections.

Good Luck!

since its on the wifi questions, do you think the Atheros AR5212A Super G (108Mps) is better than the intel 2200BG in terms of connection stability?

i am using a dlink super g series router and i can use that to be more efficient. But i do not know how good/stable the atheros are....as i have not tried them before.

so anyone knows if the atheros are any good??

edited: the AR5212A is actually the AR5002 series. The newest that is available is the AR5005series(5th gen).....though there is a AR5006series that is not yet available....

My 5005 works great, although I took the 2915 out of my z70va right away so I can't say..

theres another thread on this forum that talks about the anthros card Here found it
http://www.notebookforums.com/showth...light=antheros

I would say that the antheros card is a better performer. The only issues i see are with software power button/switch and power led, which would depend on laptop model.
I would try it out and if theres any problem just shove the intel card back in

Atheros does Work fine!

Dlink super G/A (the 108 mbps ones) uses Atheros chips! That is why the work best with other Atheros cards. Atheros is only main company that makes turbo speed 108 G/A chips from what I have found out.

Just upgraded the intel 2200bg to a Atheros GN WIAG02. Works perfect and easy to install. Now i am using 108Mbps with my Dlink router and connection is stable.

After 2 days of usage......i only drop the signal once or twice....unlike the intel which constantly drop the signal. Range of the wireless is better too.

Your signal loss can be a result of a nearby cordless phone operating on the same frequency. It is very normal. You will downspeed or drop network while the phone starts clicking. try using a 5.8ghz phone or 2.4ghz whatever does not match your router freq.

a solution

i bought an internal wireless card for my alienware and it got no reception but my pcmcia card did and the laptop was in the same spot. i didn't use it for a while and my friend had a linksys wireless b usb adapter and itt was dropping signal left and right. so i was thinking and i came up with the perfect solution after i voided whatever warranty was left in the linksys adapter i opened it and i stuck one of those cell phone antenna boosters on there. i was thinking the concept is the same if that sticker can make a cell phone antenna recieve and send signals out stronger i figured why not a wireless adapter it is the same concept in essence. so i stuck on on the linksys adapter and no dropped signal then i stuck one on the metal plate of my intel pro wireless 2200 and VOILA that baby is up and kicking with out the pcmcia and it connects to my home wireless with out trouble.
my advice to all of you who want to get better signal and don't want to spend money on a new card or adapter get a $10 cellphone antenna booster from the local cellphone stand and pop that bad boy on the wireless adapter on the metal covering and instant range

UUUUhhh
Ye i am pretty sure those antena things never worked on cell phones. BUt i am 100% sure that it would not help if you stuck it onto the metal plate of your intel wifi card. The antenas are responsible for signal gain. You can attach a coat hanger to the metal part and it will do you no good. Not sure how you got these results but i am not trying it

well i got results and if u want an alternative other then scrapping the old card and getting a new one give it is worth a shot. i used to think the same way those stickers dun work but after my experiment seeing is believing u could stick a metal coat hanger and increase the strength b/c the antenna is baasically a metal wire nothing more nothing less not magic the metal catches the signal just not feasable to stick one of those in a laptop but then again seeing is believing
