Thread Starter
I just read theres a subwoofer on the 12" G4 Powerbooks... is that true?

Nope.

Dell XPS and XPS2's have them, but i dunno. It may be an additional aftermarket battery or something with it built in. Its hard to say with all the aftermarket items floating around. Its definately NOT stock though.

Some Asus laptops have a subwoofer, and there are a lot of similarities between Asus and Apple. That could be where the idea came from.

I don't think Apple notebooks have a subwoofer. When I play audio there isn't much bass. Dell 17" notebooks have subwoofers. I am not sure if the 6000 has one.

my asus W1N have subwoofer, it's located below the notebook, but the sound is about he same with normal laptop, i dun think they really makes difference,
anyway is the subwoofer is really a "subwoofer" i think it may damage the HDD :P by the vibration.

my i9200 has a subwoofer (and a fairly decent set of speakers) and it really makes a difference. If I turn it off the sounds goes all tinny and crappy.

it's crap anyways, subs in laptops are a waste of valuable engineering space IMO. it's nice to have decent speakers w/ a laptop, but there's not a subwoofer solution in a laptop that will sound as good a simple pair of headphones w/ a good bass response. needless to say if u actually want to listen to music in the open, an external solution is pretty much the only way to go. the sub solution at best will take a crap tin sound to sound average at best, again imho.

My soon to be Asus W2V has a subwolfer in it,...I read somewhere that Asus makes the cases for the powerbooks, so they do indeed, have alot in common

The speakers in my i9200 are good enough (and loud enough - I mean I can sit down with a group of people and watch a film with no real hassle) not to actually need an external solution. They're certainly better than any of the USB powered options out there and are really convenient when moving from place to place etc.

ASUS has a contract to make the iBooks. Quanta won the bid for the Powerbooks. Apple designs their own stuff then contracts out for production.

Subwoofer vibrate really much on mine when playing at MAX volume. After, getting my hand off my keyboard... I still feel the vibration in my hands..

Are laptop subwoofers any good?
relative to laptops w/o them, yes. relative to any half-assed stereo equipment, no.

I always thought headphones would be better, or speakers on the desk, right?
yes, usually. most heaphones are better than stock laptop speakers. even 2 speakers setups will have better bass response than the notebook's stuff as the diameter of the speakers is dramatically larger, relatively speaking.

That's what I thought. I never thought those really small speakers in the laptop were any good.
