Just a quick reply:

I ran my system without reformatting for a long time and it was fine. I only reformatted recently because I wanted a clean upgrade form Home to Pro.

The first thing I did with my system when I got it was to simply go into Add/Remove Programs and uninstall everything I didn't want. I got rid of a lot of bloat that way.

Then I used WinTasks Pro (you can DL a free demo, or some other similar app) to clean up all the things that were starting automatically with Windows and to look at all the processes that were running and weed out that last few things.

Then I ran Registry Mechanic to clean out all the leftover stuff from uninstalling everything.

That was most of it, and it made a big difference. You can install different video drivers as you see fit, and things like that, but there's no NEED to format and reinstall if you know your way around XP. (sounds like you do)

Sorry to hear about your losses; I hope everyone you know is safe.

I'm off to bed, enjoy the new system!

I should add that while I was running it this way, all my benchmarks and so forth were on par with everyone elses. Reformatting is really only something you might want to do if you really don't know Windows enough to clean it out yourself.

Oh, and there are a lot of good guides available online for weeding through your services as well. (Start, Run, services.msc)

Or if you just want to salt the earth and get it all done in one sweeping motion instead of a hundred little ones.

I ran my XPS Gen 2 for a month or so without reformatting and having just installed all the things I didn't want and letting a program called Tune-Up clean up the registry and such, and it ran very well. I finally reformatted because I wanted a clean slate from which to make it mine. If you don't want to have to do that, you certainly don't have to. Just uninstall all the programs you don't want and use a program to clean your registry and sort your system out. Tune-Up has a 30 day free trial period, and it is 100% active during that time. Go to www.tune-up.com to check it out. I love it, and the new 2006 version JUST came out.

thanks,
any other suggestions would be welcome

Reformatting is what you do if you DO know windows well enough and want maximum performance for your OS. I would never, ever, accept a "cleaned out" XP install over a brand new one, there's just so much that you can't get rid of, no matter how hard your look. That and reformatting takes a fraction of the time. Follow the guide in my sig, it lays it out pretty well

I do know Win xp very well. However dell told me the only way to get my full xp media edition is to call tech support after my 9300 XPS Gen 2 arrives then I can get the full disk.

I believe if I format and use the recovery disk I get all the C**P back.
