I'm thinking of putting Gentoo on my 3880, once i get some free time. but i don't want to use KDE or Gnome. I've used fluxbox and found it fun. Does anyone have experience with others such as Enlightenment, or Unix Desktop Environment (UDE)?

E17 is beautiful, but I dont believe it will compile from Portage, try it let it compile what it can, then download a snapshot of it and manually compile the rest Works great.

E17 is freakin awesome. The visual effects they have are pretty amazing espcially since they dont use the composite extension. I'm partial to fvwm2 myself, but it takes a while to get it looking pretty. Once you do tho, it can emulate the functions of any of wm pratically.

Waitaminute.... E17 is not stable yet, is it?

P.S. LOL @ Location, DimGR. Make sure your firewall doesn't let any Martians through

I have E17 installed. It's sorta stable from what I've used. I experience a lot of little hiccups- The mouse will stick for a second. It's really annoying. Also, I had problems with maya. In maya you have to constantly use the [alt] key... unfortunately it was unresponsive in E17. The visuals are REALLY nice, but they get tiring after 5 minutes.

Honestly, if they can get E17 rock solid stable, get it to detect installed apps better, fix the minor glitches and clean up the menus I'll probably use it as my main GUI. It's not quite there yet.

Personally, I use just WindowMaker by itself. But, if you want another full-scale window manager, try out xfce.

e17 is not released yet no. Personally on my install I havent had any problems yet doing audio work. As was said above the mouse hangs for half a second when it hasnt been used in a LONG time, but I thought that was a problem with my wireless and NOT e17 myself

I havent had anything crash yet, any real hiccups or bugs myself, though I havent customized it yet like I really should. The aforementioned ALT problem is probably due to e catching the alt and not sending it to the program(At least when you rightclick, that always pulls up the e menu, very handy at times but I havent started using blender yet so I will probably have similar problems, then I will look into it more), I am sure there is a fix for it I dont know yet though

Fluxbox aint the prettiest thing out there by any stretch of the imagination, but it is fast and works. Gnome can be decently fast and work, and well its gnome, I am sure everyone here has seen gnome at one point or another

Xfce I wasnt to impressed with when I tried it to be honest. But that is just my opinion, take it with a grain of salt.
