Check this out: http://today.reuters.com/news/newsAr...L-SHIPPING.xml

looks like we will be picking up our notebooks at the post office now, dell wants to save some more money . if u want things delivered to your house now, it will cost extra. i take this as kind of an insult. i mean we spend thousands of dollars on a product and we have to pay extra to get it delivered to our house because they dont have a local store in my area. im sure this will boost sales!!

your thoughts...??

Well i dont agree with you on this one , I think thats pretty nice thing to do , if you ask me i would have probably paid more for shipping to be able to have my laptop ship at the post office ...

Dell CEO said :The new shipping option is convenient for customers who aren't at home when deliveries are scheduled, Davis added. Now they can pick up their computers at the post office after work or on Saturdays
And thats true , for those of us who are rarely home during week days , its pretty nice , since we dont have to deal with companies like UPs etc... to have the package ship at a specific time , you just go to your post office and pick it up .. as simple as that ...

well it might be a convience to some with a nearby post office yes. but those of us that have to drive a ways, i would rather my notebook show up at my house. im not saying this is completely a bad idea, im just saying its ridiculous to have to pay extra to have it delivered to my home. they should give the option.
Well yeah , that i agree with you , they should have put it as an option , but im pretty sure that if you made a poll most of the people would actually prefer to have the system delivered at a post office , to be honest a really low minority of people are living far from a post office , id say 95% of all the people are living in a 10Km range of a post office ,

They have post office everywhere now , even in grocerie store...

If its price you are worried about, then atleast take into consideration that you will be paying even more to get a laptop/desktop from a "local store" and it will probably have inferior specs, too.

What irks me is that they have done away with the good coupons and now the "free" shipping at the same time. They should atleast keep some promos to inspire some people to buy..
Yeah but it seems pretty sad that they are charging for a home delievery. I would think Dell is saving a ton of money by just sending all of them to the post office.

They also lost lots of profits because of those coupons , so you have to take that into consideration , why do you think that DELL is so big today , because they had the best prices of all manufacturers , there was no way to beat dell prices , and even now without super good coupons , they still have the best prices for alot of laptops .... they've been giving us gifts(coupons/Deals) and youre throwing that away like it was nothing ... problem is that you guys always want ri pay less , you see a laptop with specs X at 1500 , and youll start looking around if you could find it at 1400 instead , and then once you found it at 1400 , you start to look around again to see if you could find it cheaper at some place ...... this has to stop somewhere

Highly doubtful. I have had pretty bad luck with Dell customer Service and I think their quality sucks. I would never consider buying a Dell for full price. The biggest draw dell had was the low prices. Without Coupons, I dont know why anyone would want to buy from them when they can get something of higher quality like an Asus, Toshiba, Apple, Hp/Compaq, Sony, IBM, Compal, Uniwill, Sager, Gateway, Samsung, Panasonic, or MSI..

Ok That's just a classic , the guy who had bad luck with DELL , so now hes flamming DELL and is telling that every manufacturer is better ....

DELL isnt the biggest reseller for nothing , let's compare DELL with the other ones ...

Asus , The second best laptop designer out there , quality built , and some powerfull laptop too , better than DELL - Yes

Toshiba , built quality is similar to DELL , less choices , and not much high end laptop , better than DELL - No

Apple , The BEST , but its an apple , running on a diffenrent O/S and built in a very different way , just cant compare

Hp/Compaq , TRASH , not else need to be said

Sony , better overall quality , if you are willing to put an extra 1000$ for the same system on DELL website which is 1000$ less

Compal , Availability = poor

Uniwill , better than DELL , but still alot harder to get compared to major manufacturer , plus people wont really trust them since its an unknown to most of the "average buyer"

Sager , better than DELL , but you are paying abit too much for the name ...

Gateway , again TRASH

Samsung/Panasonic , to be honest ive never seen a samsung or panasonic laptop in my entire life ...

Before saying that DELL is the worst around , take your time and take a look around and youll see that dell is far from being the worst , the problem with dell is that they have so many customers that its hard for them to keep a good quality product , the verification and testing has to be done quicker than all of the others manufacturers around !

I dont really have a problem with Dell...As long as I get 35-50% off...Paying regular price for that stuff is dumb, but thats just my opinion...

By the way, Panasonic makes the tough book and I believe Samsung makes Dell notebooks, or you can see them here

i think your the first person i have ever met that is happy with things being taken away. the profits they "lost" im sure were recovered by the quantity ordered. if it wasnt for those coupons and free shipping, etc. then they would have had less sales. dells marketing has got them where they are today, like people have said before coupon users were/are a minority. but thats beside the point, its a kick in the nuts for them to now say, "if you want your computer to be delivered to your home, your gonna pay extra for it, otherwise you can go pick it up during your lunch hour "

Im not saying that im happy with this , to be honest i dont mind at all , but you are talking like its the end of the world , they wont be charging you like 1000$ more for home shipping , its only going to be a few bucks ...

you made that thing sound bad ... what if ..

If you want your computer to be delivered to your home your gonna pay extra for it , otherwise you can go pick it up during your luch hour , or after work , or before work , or on the weekend , and you wont have to deal with the ****in paper from UPS on your door saying that they will come by tomorror at 2pm , while you arent at home becuase you are working ...

its easy to make something sound more bad than it is , or better than it is ... the truth is that lots of people will find the new shipping method better , and those who really want to have their laptop delivered home , wont mind paying those few extra bucks .

i dunno... i guess there is always ways of looking at things in different perspectives. i think they are just taking too much away all at the same time, lol. ahh well....

They're just making excuses. Bottom line is, they're saving money.

Simple as that.

I don't care either way, I will never again be buying a Dell product.

LOOOOL. You criticize another guy for expressing his opinion in an extreme way, but then you move on to express your opinions on other companies in the same way.

Actually, while he came on a little strong, he is pretty much correct in everything he said. I can't argue with much of that. I do find it funny that he forgot to mention IBM, which is arguably the best PC laptop maker in the industry.

Anyway, about the coupons, yeah, Dell would lose some profit per sale, but they would gain a lot of sales, which would balance it out. They've had the coupons for at least a year or two now, and they wouldn't have offered them for that long if they were losing money off of them.

I think what Dell needs to do is stop selling those piece of shit $299 computers. The people that buy those don't need to be shopping online for a computer. They often don't know what they want or need. They need to go to a store and learn about computers. A lot of people that buy those crappy $299 systems get them, and they find out their brand new system, which they think they paid a lot for, can't even do half the stuff they wanted to do with it. I've seen plenty of people who bought the Dimension 2400 thinking they could play the newest games. I think Dell should stop selling extremely low-end computers and focus on mid-range to high-end systems. The 3000 should be the crappiest system they offer. The 3000 is actually decent for an average user.

I think the free shipping thing is only going away on the low-end computers. I guess that means if you buy an XPS, then you will get free shipping.

Hopefully Dell will release the XPS M140 and the Inspiron 710m and be done with changes for a while. Hopefully they will bring back coupons before Christmas.

Dell is in a tight market, they are forced to reduce cost and lower prices.

Look, for an airplane trip, I don't always get a pillow and blanket on a flight anymore
(ok, I wouldn't use it anyways - nasty, nasty), no more food per say - unless your first class ($3 for some bad nacho cheese, chips, a dab of salsa, a 1/4 a turkey slim jim and 4 tiny cookies? 7-11 before the flight for a snack on the plane now), and now they're removing power plugs so people can't power a laptop.

These little things add up, I believe it was figured that by not putting an olive in a drink, one little olive, that a carrier saved millions of dollars each year.

Many manufacturers don't give you restore disks anymore, you have to make your own via a program they offer or buy them. I can see all manuals, except for saftey alerts, going to PDF format.

Look, Dell is not perfect, they have outgrown their small town first class customer service they use to have. As they became bigger, things had to slack... you just can't keep an eye on every little operation anymore. They make a very decent mid and high-end machine and if you don't see the value in getting a boutique system they are a strong choice... that being said, it would take a hell of a deal for me to get one with all the people that I know that had issues getting assistance with their machines when something went wrong. Also I have an issue with a company that can't sell their accidental/extended warranties in states that require money to be placed in accounts incase they go out of business so that repairs can be honored.... one of the reasons they don't sale some of their warranties in Florida.

Back to point, changing the mail options should not be an issue, rather than raise prices, they are giving you an option. I personally am surprised they ship via USPS... I would think they would make a deal with UPS for a service like this.

So you may get your laptop one day later, I'm sure you get notified by a post card the mail carrier leaves that there is a package for you at a certain location. If you rather get it sooner and directly, then you pay, but you get 10 days to pick it up and most post offices I see are open by 7AM and if you could request it to be sent to a hub, like an airport, many of those are open 24 hours (not sure iof the pickup windows close though).

Really a non issue, unless they went from UPS to USPS for this change.
I think UPS is totally Junk. I have just had the worst experience with them. They have no service at all.

USPS is much better. I would love it if I could pick up my package at my local post office instead of having to deal with UPS junk.

Howeve, Dell has just made the greatest mistake any manufacturer can make on my new inspiron 9300: They shipped the box without a computer! Fortunately I checked it when I got it and sent it back. Their support service has been good. I have yet have to wait more than 5 mins on any call and I am getting a new order that will be mailed next day air. So should get comp by next week.

Hopefully nothing goes wrong this time.

well dell has been permanetly banned thru their stupidity from my shopping options, i have delt with enought crap from them. the only thing i would even concider from them is a PDA since they still have one of the best.
