Noise canceling headphones

Simply, who makes the best? Panasonic, Bose, Senhezier(sp)? I can't hear my DVD's on the airplane.

Probably Sony. They are all used on the MTV music videos and stuff.

I would choose between Bose and Sennheiser. Sony has some good stuff too.

For headphones to be used in a noisey envrionment, I would choose a pair of closed headphones, not earbuds or open cuffed.

Also, you might look into one of those portable headphone amps, especially with a more expensive pair of phones which has a higher impedance rating. The better the headphones, the more power you will need to drive them (usually, but not in all cases) which the line level output of a sound card can't drive properly.

Those are nice but 300$ for head phones You could get a whole surround sound system with a reciver for that they must be really good. I have a pare of 20 dollar koss headphones that are more than adequate for me plenty loud.

The Bose look nice, I can walk to the Sharper Image from my office so I will go and check those out. And of course to make sure they fit in my deluxe backpack.

Noise Canceling....

I travel alot because of work and am constantly in airplanes or stuck in a noisy data center somewhere. I've found after trying the Sony noise cancelling earbuds, the Sennheiser noise cancelling head phones, and the Bose noise cancelling head phones that the Bose are the best ones at 1. canceling out noise and 2. is the best sounding of the bunch. This is just my opinion, I just tried each one for a week or so and then switched to the next and finally ending up on the Bose. If you have a need for them then I would highly recommend it, but if you are not going to be in noisy environments like airplanes or data centers, then I would say just go with a 20 dollar set of Sony high fidelity head phones they work just fine. Its what I use for gaming at home, since the GF doesn't like to hear the walls shake from my Klipsch ProMedia 2.1's.

Take my advice on this subject - I know what im talking about here...

STAY AWAY!!!

Noise cancelling headphones neither perform as well as they should while cancelling noise, nor do they provide good sound quality. You will be disappointed in both areas. They have to compromise somewhere to reduce costs of production BUT they make sure you pay for the projected cost of what the equipment ACTUALLY should have cost to produce had they put in the right stuff.

ALTERNATIVES :-

Closed cans, in particular the circumaural closed cans provide amazing isolation and superb sound quality. Sennheiser HD-280 and some of the Beyerdynamic headphones fall in this category. Also you can go for the Etymotic ear plugs or the Shure ear plugs which offer more isolation than anything else out there!!! These completely block out the outside sound and you dont end up raising the volume to deafening levels just to hear the music...

Take my advice on this one. You will end up paying less (Shure's are $99.00 and the Etymotics are $125.00) and hearing more...

You will also avoid hearing problems like Tinnitus etc.

Cheers!!

Brother,
Do you know how much a set of studio quality cans goes for? WELL over $300. Try upwards of $2000. And I'd also assume that by your post, you do not travel as extensively as many of us on these boards do (myself, 6 flights a week on the average). $300 to be able to "escape" on a busy flight is well worth it.

He's right...I have a pair of Sennheiser HD-650's on order and they retail for $450.00 and there are Stax/Orpheus cans out there that retail for $800 - $2000 and higher...

Besides you also need an amplifier for these headphones...

It's a No Brainer! - BOSE

Bose Quite Comfort 2 are the best - The first generation were nice but the new models are a bit more refined and add some must have features for the traveler.

The series 2 has a GREAT travel case that is quite rugged and has just enough room to hold an Ipod. Series 2 gets rid of the hanging switch for nose reduction (it also carried the battery) its now built into the right phone. Series 2 is either ON or OFF. You must turn them on in order to hear music - where as the old style you could listen w/out noise cancellation activated. Another great feature on the Quite Comfort 2's is the fact that you can remove the wire from the headphone - making them look less like "Electronic" devices that need to be shut down for take-off/landing. Only 1 wire – vs the old style that had a wire for each ear – little change but very nice.

I fire mine up when I get on the plane and don't take them off until I land - In first class I don't even get questioned... In coach I have to explain what they are at times - but being able to simply remove the wire usually does the trick.

I purchased them intending to only use them for travel - but find that I'm using them more and more outside of travel. My Sennheiser RS85's are getting a bit dusty...

Oh - and I saw someone saying the ER-4S MicroPro Earphones (Stereo) $ 330 : Pair did a better job and cancelling noise -- I have 2 pairs of the ER4's (1 S and 1P) w/amps and they are not in the same category (They are great Audiophile options - but they don't fit the needs the Bose address).

Oh - Oh ( I keep re-reading the thread) - my Sens' HD 600's are nice - but since I now carry my Bose with me everywhere (easy to carry with case etc...) I don't find myself using them much.

$$ - For anyone looking for Noise Canceling - $300 is the price of admission - it’s as simple as that.

The price is not a huge issue for me, it sounds like you travel like I do. If you travel by air all month like I do, any amount of comfort you can add is worth the money.

I will usually beg my way into frist class just for the leg room, unless I have some miles saved up, but my company will not even spring for business class unless its international.

I would invest in the ear plugs (Ety's and Shure) and stay away from headphones because when you are in the aircraft trying to sleep - you want to be able to place your head anywhere in any position you like without obstruction from a pair of headphones...

Ety's are better than the Shure's IMO but thats just my observation...

Try out the $124 Etymotic ER6 or the Shure E2c before you go higher. These mwill satisfy your needs IMO and there is no need to blow your wad unless that is your primary intention.

You could get a nice Rio Nitrus, Mint amplifier from JMT Audio (www.jmtaudio.com) and the Ety's/Shure and be set for any destination.
