Please visit www.headfi.com and you will find tons of answers and headphones for sale for cheap.

I would suggest the $60 Sennheiser HD-280 or the $80 - $100 Grado SR-80's and a mini or CMOY Mint Headphone amplifier.

Yes/No

But really, you dont NEED it with enclosed headphones. I hear the sounds all-around me in BF42, and dont need it.

Regardless, the Zalmans are CRAP, and you WILL regret that purchase.

does a headphone amp improve quality at all?

Yes, because most highend headphones need a higher power than the line level output that most devices provide. Sometimes, but not always, the higher impedance or efficient design of highend headphones needs the extra power, and without the power you will either A) clip the output of the line device, or B) not get enough volume, or C) get poor sound, without a lowend bass, or a combo of all 3.

Here you go:
http://www.ecost.com/ecost/shop/detail.asp?dpno=135022

It shows 99, but add it to your cart, and it will show 69.

HD-250?? I was talking about the HD-280...

If you have a little more $$ go for the HD-580 with an AMP or a HD-590 without an AMP.

These headphones will sound like crap the first few days (or first 50 - 60 hours) so run Bassy music or static through them for at least 50 hours before you evaluate them critically...

I recommend you go to www.headfi.com before making your purchase...lots of stuff goes on sale and you could find what you want for cheap...

If you're on a budget, like me, I suggest the Plantronics .Audio 90 for 30 dollars. Great headphones for gaming, and voice recognition, but if you have more money, go for whatever is best.

I am very impressed with the $20.00 Koss headphones that are available in Walmart. They are very good and are rated even at HeadFi.com

give them a look

i've gone through three types of sony's since receiving my lappy and i've ended up with the, somewhat bulky, sony mdr-v150 headphones. $20 at bestbuy. best sounds for the buck, and comfortable as sh1t.
Yeah those are very nice too...

But once you've had these $20 - $80 headphones and you try out a $150 - $500 pair you are SOLD!!! Trust me - the difference has to be heard to be believed...

Almost Binaural presentation from a stereo amp and headphones...thats the speciality of these expensive headphones (especially open ones) - they widen the soundstage spectacularly...!!!

Mmmmm, headphones

I like a good set of ear muffs and have had many, many sets over the years. My current 3 sets are, at the cheap end going up..

Sony fontopia MDR-EX71SL = inexpensive and decent sound, very comfortable. Cuts out a lot of noise due to their design and are ideal for lappy use.

Sennheiser HD580 = middling price, extremely nice open sound, very comfortable. Needs a lot of juice and a good soundcard to get the best of them. Works ok with plain lappy though.

Shure E5c = Ouch! expensive, and with custom earmolds even more so. Comfortable with the custom earmolds. Sounds sublime. Only use with a good soundcard as they sound crap with plain lappy output... just too damn revealing.

Wow, all 3 start with an 'S'.... spooky!

I also use a Echo Indigo pcmcia soundcard... excellent sound and power enough for all 3 headphone types.

Dont splurge on the Echo Indigo just yet...

Headroom Corp. is bringing out a new Airhead amplifier called the Bithead which also functions as an external soundcard for a laptop or desktop using USB 2.0

I spoke with Tyll Hertsons and he told me that the new Bithead offers superior SQ and Tyll doesnt lie. He told me not to purchase the Headroom Supreme ($449) because he didnt think it was right for me - its because of him that I bought the MG Head OTL MK-1 - He is a enthusiast and I trust what he says.

Hold out for the Headroom Bithead and pick one up as soon as they become available. Dont bother with the "TOTAL" packages because they are for people with "Golden Ears" that can hear stuff even Bats cannot

Here is link for the curious :-

Headroom Bithead

Gsferrari,

I've been seriously considering one of these BitHeads to use with my 3G Ipod and my Sager 8890 (when it finally arrives), but I don't know, truthfully, how good these amps really are. I checked out the Headfi site and will be spending some time there, but to avoid having to wade through 3000+ posts initially, and since you've clearly been there at least a short while, are you aware of what people's opinions are, regarding Headroom's amps? I realize these new BitHeads aren't quite out yet, but I'm wondering about Headroom's reputation for creating good amps, or whether I should look at other portable amps.

I had just purchased a set of Ety ER-4P's but haven't been impressed at all with the sound, even though my ears are clean, hear well, and I was able to achieve a great seal. Are you aware of whether or not these buds need to be broken in first like a lot of the cans out there? If so, I could hook them up to a stereo and let them play overnight. Just wanted to see if you knew anything about this.

And one last question to anyone... I'm also looking for a great, comfortable pair of closed headphones. The open air's look really nice, but I don't want to disturb anyone around me. I've been looking at a couple of Sennheisers. Any other recommendations?

The airhead and bithead amps are very good for low impedence headphones and efficient headphones in general. They dont have sufficient juice to power the higher end phones.

THe Air/Bithead is perfect with a iPod/Laptop and a Grado-SR80 which is a superb closed can. The Etymotic and Shure are VERY good - either you havent gotten a good seal or you need an amp to power them. I was amazed by the bass on the Shure in particular...

Try the Grado SR-80/125 ; Sennheiser HD-280/590/212 PRO (the 212 PRO is great for games and mp3's but not for audiophilesque listening)

Headroom amps are VERY good quality. And you have 30 days to return them if you are not satisfied...

You can also try several flavors of the CMOY/Mint/Meta42 amps that people keep seling...severay DIYers also make amps on request (one in particular is JMT Audio . www.jmtaudio.com who is very nice to work with).

No matter what you get - get a headphone + amp - it makes a BIG difference!!
