How does Windows XP Upgrade version work?

If I get 3 windows XP Upgrade to use on 3 different computers, can I use the same "upgrade from CD" for all 3 win XP upgrade CDs? Or how does it know it is a vallid CD that I'm upgrading from? Will the genuine microsoft software validation work even if same CD is used for previous version check during install? Is there any info stored from the original CD during install that is use to validate. As far as I know all OEM CDs are identical so that wouldn't work? I got a windows 2000 OEM CD that I was planing to use.

Yes, you can use the same CD on all 3 systems, but you will have to use different installation and activation codes. Let's say you have 3 systems, A, B, and C. You also have 3 CDs, 1, 2, and 3. Now, with each of those CDs, you have a key, CD 1 has key i, CD 2 has key ii, and CD 3 has key iii. You can use CD 1 to install Windows XP on computers A, B, and C. However, you have to use one key with CD 1. It does not matter which key, but it's just practical to use the key that came in the same package as CD 1. So, you would use key i with CD 1 to install on computer A. You would use key ii with CD 1 to install on computer B. You would use key iii with CD 1 to install on computer C.
