700m vs 710m?

I'm ready to buy a 700m, but with this 710m around the corner I wonder if I should wait?

Do we have more information on this updated version?

Do we have a release date for Canada?

Questions more questions...

Thanks.

I've heard nothing about it but I sure would like to see that M140!

Other than the mysterious 710m reference in the BIOS updater program, there nothing whatsoever known about the 710m. If you're ready to buy a 700m you might as well just grab one.

agreed....you dont want to be waiting for a system that wont be coming out anytime soon, if ever...

as long as no major upgrades are in the works go for it
i shoulda waited on the 8600, i bought mine in late jan, around feb then anounced all the new ones with 533 bus, PCI-e and other goodies

If it's just a sonoma upgrade, it might not even be worth waiting for. The sonoma platform uses more power, which translates to slightly shorter battery life. The only advantage is the GMA900 over the IE2, which is a huge improvement, but you're still getting only integrated.

For me it would break down like this. If they do release a 710m within 21 days of you buying a 700m, go ahead and return the 700m and buy the 710m. No harm done. If it's not released within 21 days of you buying a 700m, then it was too long a wait anyway. Kinda screwy, but that's what I would do. Hope this helps.

But their is a restocking fee now if nothing is wrong with it.

Correction: there MAY be a restocking fee, depending on how lucky you are and who you get to handle the return.

I still haven't heard anything about the 710m other than the email we received on the name change (new luxury line ). Even at the kiosk, we usually don't find anything out until the last minute, however, my lead is now a DBR (Dell Badged Rep), so he works directly for Dell, not the temp agency they use for the sales reps, so I'll try and get some info from him and see if I can share any of it here.

If you bought a 700m then you already have the 710m since these two notebooks share the exact same BIOS which means exact same hardware...more or less!

It might take more power, ( only a TINY TINY bit more ) but it gives you better performance

I somehow doubt that's true. Unless you mean the 700ms currently which use 400MHz CPUs and the Intel Extreme 2 is actually Sonoma... which isn't possible.

Oooh! What is the 710m?

That's the million dollar question! All we know thus far is the 710m will be the replacement for the 700m, however no one knows whether it will have different internals and options or just be a name change like the new luxury line (9100-->XPS 400). I'm still trying to dig up info, but haven't heard anything yet.

FYI: Since a 700m flashed up to the latest BIOS now reads "700m/710m" on the intitial BIOS splash, means that the two systems will share the same BIOS which doesn't leave a whole lotta room for major hardware upgrades.

Just don't hold your breath for significant differences in the 710m which is nothing but phantomware at the present time...

What he says.

Dell raised price for 700m rather significantly. It is now around $1200. Why would they do it if they plan to introduce brand new flashy product?

Although I am not very good in High Science Of Marketing.

High Science of Marketing is often akin to Voodoo and/or getting drunk and deciding what would be the funniest thing to do.

Dell raised prices because apparently they don't realize everybody was buying from them because of plentiful coupons and awesome pricing after the coupons. Dell isn't known for quality of product and I doubt very much most people would pay equivalent market prices for their notebooks. Maybe after a month of two of awful sales they'll bring the wonderful coupons back.

True. But problem is, afte all those wonderful coupons and everybody buying from them they had a flat quarter and stock went down quite a while.

I am sure some marketing heads were cut off in the after-market process.
