The problem with that Asus book is that the display is too small. I'm flexible on other stuff, but the display has to be 17" and wide. The models that sport a 17 inch screen fly right by the ZD8000 price tag.

One other thing...

Should I get the smallest configuration for the ZD8000 and then expand to 2GB RAM, bigger and faster HD, etc. or should I just order it how I want it from Hpshopping? Will there be a significant price difference?

Update:

I just got off the phone with a sales rep to check a couple of things:

1) No international guarantee on their products. The guy explained that local official service shops are able -but not required- to do repairs or give me a brand new book if something goes wrong with it. This is a big bummer because I keep reading horror tales of bad equipment coming straight from the factory. He suggested that I'd have to make full use of my charm abilities (if any) to get it serviced down here. It's weird, because I purchased a faulty inkjet printer in Miami a year ago and local service brought one in from the US to replace it. I guess it was luck...

2) Apparently, the delivery dates are very precise and often get to destination earlier than published on the order. It's a good thing. He also said that I don't even have to be there to accept delivery, and anyone could do it. This is a big break because it makes my planning more flexible.

3) PAL TV system does not work on their TV tuner. This has also been confirmed via email a couple of days ago.

So, how lucky would I have to be to not need the guarantee? Are the stakes high?

Hmmm, you're always taking a chance w/o a warantee...
I don't know the odds. Teck would probably know.

Yeah... Well in 11 years I've had to send back 1 laptop (personal laptop) for a problem other than the hard drive going out... Hard Drives go out but they are fairly cheap so sometimes HP has you send the system into them sometimes they just give you the drive...

The systems not a zv5000/r3000 which are systems with a good deal of AC jacks that go out... Though i've never had one go out...

I would say as long as you make sure its okay when you buy it in the US and test it... it should be fine as long as you take good care of it...

I don't know how often you come to the U.S. or if you have family here but if there is no international warranty if something happened you could send it to a family member to have them take care of it...

What country are you in? Maybe there is a way for you to get the warranty...

I'm in Uruguay, a small spot on the South American map.

Well, I'll have about a week to test the notebook. I'll have to see how that turns out. I really don't understand what people do to these machines. If you read the comments on CNet, they are frightnening. By they way they spell and express themselves, some of them can be read as kids who probably bang it around and it results in a broken machine. Then they complain...

Anyway. I still haven't purchased it, but I'm close, very close.

How do you plan to get it serviced? It will probably cost you more to get the machine to them than to fix it by your own means.

Can the video card of this thing be swapped? Are there any known brands that will work with the ZD8000? I'm specially thinking about physical space and heat.

oh i didnt have a post in this thread, and i can find the post that i had bout the zd8000 wat i kno about it and wat i think about it. but ill jus say everything is great about it. im jus the average joe wen it comes to using my computer, play counterstrike, city of heroes, live for speed, battlefield 2, myspace, aim, movies. stuff like that. oh and every now and then home work. so yea iono for answeres to ur cooling issue, http://www.notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=107091
and
http://www.notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=108058
and as far as ur battery question. yea battery life sux using a 17' high power p4. but hey these are usually desktop replacements rite??? i would say there ment to be plugged in. but if u have to, for me my average time not plugged in is 1:30 average. oh and the noise thing, do ppl have super sensitive ears or sumn??? i dont get wat ppl say wen they say it can get loud. i dont think its loud at all. a ps2 running sounds louder than the laptop. i use my laptop 3-5 hours at a time, so i kno all my fans are running, and wen it is, i really dont notice it. bottom line is this laptop is GREAT couldnt of wished for ne thing better for how much it was. i think this laptop is worth way more than wat it goes for, but thats why we love hp. iv never had a problem with my zd, and i dont think i will for a very long time. unless i step on it, or spill coffee on the keyboard, or shoot it with my gun.

If you search the Internet, you will find a major issue with the power cord on HP's and Compaqs. Apparently, the power jack has a design flaw on it causing eventually the motherboard and ALL components to fry out. Worse, the threads state that is is not covered under the warranty.

This is why I went with the Asus as they have been very reliable to me so far...

That was only true in some cases with the zd7000 series. It is corrected in the zd8000 series. It is a completely redesigned power jack with multiple pins and a tight fit. I haven't heard of any cases of fried zd8000's either. I think it partly has to do with the fact that the X600 video card does not get as hot as the Nvidia cards.

Your wrong... It happened on 2 laptops and it wasn't a "Major Issue" It was on the zd7000's & the zv5000's... Not many people had the problem. If you look at other companys, they are also having/had the same problem... However i think Sager was the first to fix it and then HP... Its also normally because of user error...

The jacks were never designed to have the AC Adapter dangling down while its plugged in... its too much weight for the jack to handle. The reason we are/were seeing lots of them is because more and more people are buying laptops that don't use common sense.

Most laptops are reliable as long as you use common sense...

HP Now has made the jacks idiot proof by adding more Pins...

Thanks for the update - I will post the link where people were complaining on the zd8000's frying out. Maybe we can get their opinion as the price is still great for the zd8xxx.

Well I purchased a zd7010 from Worst Buy on 12/13/03. I have taken it back for repair on 10/24/05 for the 4th time for the same non working AC jack. I have taken excellant care of it since I paid $1849. + 299. for 3 year warranty. My laptop has spent as much time not working (more if you count having to get it back to store and have them ship it and repair it) so my personal experience with this unit is it was a poorly designed AC jack. Oh and it would smell like it was having a melt down despite never leaving air conditioning.

So, you have taken it into the future to get repaired "10/24/05"?

The 7000 series had a known problem with the power jack that they will repair whether you are within your warranty or not. However, there is not a known issue of zd8000s "frying out".
