Laptop HardDrive War: Seagate Momentus 7200.1 100GB vs Hitachi Travelstar 7k100 100GB

Does anyone have any information on which of the two 7200rpm, 100gb laptop hard drives is better? It would be awesome if we had a head to head comparison...
no experience with either of these, but from what i've read seagates are generally better. and i believe they come with a longer warranty.
Seagate = 5 year warranty and the specs are almost exactly the same. but no I haven't seen a head to head comparison benchmark.

Seagate = 5 year warranty
thats 5 year from when its sold (sold to reseller/oem), not when you buy it
so if its been on the shelf for 1 year, they arent gonna give you an extension to 5 years if the oem/reseller has had it for a year

Hitachi drives are normally higher performance then Seagate drives at least in the 3.5" realm. Performance differences may be slighter with 2.5" notebook drives. Seagate drives are usually quieter and offer the 5 year warranty with advanced replacement. Hitachi has 3 years on their drives and currently no advanced replacement.

Segate drives are good in general, I only buy them due to the warranty.

Side note: If you buy an external Segate you're better off getting an internal drive and an external housing, their externals only have a 1 year.

HDTach benchmarks for both drives have been posted in the following thread:

I love Seagate HDs.. they make the smoothest running and most quiet drives.

Well if I am seeing correctly, it looks like the comparison is as follows....

Seagate Momentus 7200.1
Max: 45.4MB/s
Min: 24.9MB/s
Avg: 36.1MB/s
CPU Usage: 14.7%
Random Access: 15ms
Burst: 71.7MB/s

Hitachi Travelstar 7k100
Max: 56.8 MB/s
Min: 29.2 MB/s
Avg: 43.9 MB/s
CPU Usage: 8.0%
Random Access: 14.9ms
Burst: 88.4 MB/s

Looks like the Hitachi wins across the board... Of course, these arent exactly fair comparisons as I am sure the testing environments werent exactly the same.

or the cpu overhead / power usage / noise / heat

what software is used to test the hard drives?
Who did the tests or are tehse results from the manufacturer?
I ran the above test for the Hitachi 7K100 drive. They are real world performance values that an end-user might expect (not theoretical ones from the manufacturer). I simply ghosted my OS onto the new 7K100, closed any running apps, and ran the HDTach benchmark a few times. You can see the laptop used in my sig. Testing for the Momentus 7200.1 was performed by a different person/system.

Sony S270P | 2.0GHz P-M + AS5 | 1GBx1 | ATI9700 64MB | 7K100 100GB 7200RPM | WIFI | BT | 7hr.extended.batt | CPU undervolt | 4.2 lbs

So in other words that compairison is useless?

even small system difference can make a big difference. about a year ago when sata was starting to become cheap me and my buddy both got one and tested them, our systems were close to the same, same cpu, same amount of ram, but i had a high end mobo to his cheaper one, and it made a huge difference in speed, even switched drives to see the same results.

I dropped in on this thread to mention Seagate's great warranty but since about 15 people already did it, I won't bother.

that isn't a fair comparison because the Seagate 7200.1 is an 80GB drive (hence lower areal density), while the 7K100 is a 100gb drive. the Max Areal Density on the 7K100 is 66 on the 60 & 80gb drives and 81 on the 100GB drive. I'd really like to see hdtach numbers for the 7K100 100gb drive.

both drives are 100gb drives. seagate has a 100gb 7200 rpm drive, its model # is ST910021A and it can be found on seagate's website here... http://www.seagate.com/cda/products/...81,669,00.html

They HAVE a 100GB version, but murphyja was saying that a 100GB verison was not used.

Also, I don't see the big deal with the warranty comparison??
5 years vs 3 years...so what???
Do most of you think that 4 1/2 years from now you will be using the same or a similar notebook with the same hard drive? I certainly don't think that I will.

The future of drives is solid state. The same technology that gives us the 4GB iPod Nano will give us drives, or possibly something even better within a few years.

What I want is for a drive to be fast, quiet, cool and reliable. Whether it dies in 2.75 years or 4.75 years is not important to me.
