my windows install going to hell?

so i used my winxp fine last night. since then i have not modefied anything on it. the only changes made were

1 - put in a new stick of ram and tested it with Memtest x86 - passed
2 - installed ubuntu breezy on /dev/hda2 (win is /dev/hda1) ...nothing new here

so i reboot into windows just now and the start bar, and object dock should come up. the object dock never comes up, and the taskbar + start button, shows up for about a second or 2 and then disappears. wtf?

any ideas on a fix. i don't want to reinstall windows because it is a hassle and i will ahve to rebuild grub (which is a royal pain)

NVM. FIXED IT. for some reason a new object dock showed up on top of the taskbar blocking it out, and this new objectdock was blank, transparent, making it appear there was nothing.

Get an imaging program and image now while everything is running well. 10 minutes to restore an image vs. a complete Windows reinstall.

I have great success with Acronis, pretty much idiot proof and the image works perfectly. I clone the drives in the computers in my sig to keep them mirrored for backup. Zero program activation problems.

I use Norton ghost 2003, but I've used Acronis True Image in the past. It is definitely more user friendly than Ghost 2003. It also allows for incremental backups.

Haven't used the new version of Ghost, which is just a makeover of PowerQuest's Drive Image.

I'd say go with Acronis.

You can get last years model of Norton Ghost for around $10 US on ebay.

There are no really good, user friendly free drive imaging apps AFAIK.
