Multiple Crashes per Day from 8887-V due to MS updates?

Over the past few weeks, I am experiencing 3-4 crashes per day from my 8887-V. The screen either just turn black or it becomes corrupted (image break up) and the system freezes. On some of those crashes I get this error message from the Microsoft warning box about my graphic card as the culprit of the crash.

szAppName : Drivers.Display szAppVer : 10024C660188801558
szModName : ati2dvag.dll szModVer : 6.14.1.6307 Offset : 3BDA06EA

I have tried to reinstall the driver but no success in preventing the crashes.

Is this a software problem? Should I just reformat my drive and do a fresh install or do I have hardware problem with my video card? I bought the laptop around April 2003 from PC Torque.
This is just driving me nuts. I don’t play any games on it. The applications I am running are mostly the MS Office programs and some programming tools.

I had the exact same problem!!!

It used to happen whenever I used Internet Explorer - I figured it was one of microsoft's fukdates!! (Updates) that was causing the problem

However I re-installed the OS and used the newest drivers and installed only SP1 and never had this problem. I dont think I identified which update was causing this but I recently installed all their updates as well and havent had this problem.

and good luck!!

Thank you. It looks like it was a Microsoft problem. I have isolated it to Office 2003. I went back to using Office XP and the frequent crashes have stopped.

Odd, I installed Office 2003 on my 8887-X and did not have any crashes like you experienced... I only used the "Standard" Office (upgrade) - fully legit, btw (if that makes a difference).

I use Office 2K3 without problems also. The next time you have graphics driver problems, PNGU, you should try to remove your previous ones as thoroughly as possible. The new ATI drivers come with a separate CatUninstaller utility. You can extract the drivers, use the utility, then install whatever drivers you want. There are also DriverCleaner utilities out there, possibly some on DriverHeaven.net.
