iTunes Metadata lost on transfer!!!

OK, as some of you may or may not know, I used to have an Apple PowerBook, but have had a Dell iXPS Gen 2 for quite awhile. I had the problem of not being able to transfer my music over from my PowerBook to my XPS due to Windows and its restrictions of character count and usage that Mac OS X doesn't have. Well, I used a program called Media Rage 2.2 on my PowerBook to rename all the Mp3's within Windows' spec. I transferred all the music over Ethernet (about 15 gigs), and added it into iTunes and the 3 gigs or so that I had downloaded since I got the XPS.

It worked fine... Except the fact that ALL MY METADATA IS GONE!!! Metadata meaning MAINLY "My Rating", which I painstakingly took hours upon hours upon HOURS to do, and things like Play Count and such, ARE GONE!!! Somewhere in this transfer I lost that data! I though iTunes embedded it into the Mp3 file itself... Is there ANY way I can get this information back?!? I don't want to spend all that time RE-RATING all my files... Any help is appreciated! Thanks! -JB

All that stuff is stored in an XML file separate from the actual music file.

The best thing to do is zip your iTunes folder up and transfer the zip file...it's only when you transfer long file names that you get the problem, but when you zip and decompress on the other side they're fine. Also, if you zip the iTunes folder the XML file will be included and you can just dump it where it should be stored in Windows and iTunes should recognise it right away.

Woops, sorry, for some reason your post didn't show up until AFTER I added my post! I apologize! Thank you very much for the reply! I will try doing what you suggested. Thanks again, that was a weird sorta "glitch"

i think u may have problems w/ the meta data if u renamed your stuff in OS X as well. essentially itunes won't recognize the same song as what it was if the file name is changed. i went thru a similar process w/ buying a nano. i ripped my stuff w/ iTunes, but i don't care for the sparse naming features so i used tag&rename to change the filenames and such. as noted, once u do it iTunes won't recognize the files in the same way. mind u if Apple had rename functions along w/ their ID3 editing functions u'd have a chance for the data to me assigned to the new files via itunes, but as kakaze noted, the metadata isn't stored in the ID3 tag, so it won't be maintained w/ name changes.
