k...i need to buy a laptop for uni..and as my MAIN homecomputer for me...all i do is go on msn and open lots of word and download movies and watch DVDs. thats all its gonan be used for basically. Im wondering
a) is the wxga good enough for dvds and watching movies...and does the "Enhanced (Crystal View)" make any difference?

b) should i go for the bigget Z71a vs the z63a...because obviously bigger the screen is better but does a 14" widescreen suck for waching movies..and is the Z71a's bettery life that much better....?

any help would be appreciated

WXGA is great for DVDs, crystal view (or brightshine or whatever they call it) is good for movies but increases glare in brighter surroundings.

screen size is more of a preference, if you're not worried too much about having the lightest possible or if you don't travel much, i'd go for the 15" widescreen of the z71a.

on Z71A's data sheet. it state that it supports DDR333/400 SODIMM, 2 SODIMM and upto 2 Gb.

I'm debating between these two models too

Z71A is very easy to oc, check it out : http://www.overclockers.com/articles1230/index.asp

I would definitely go for the Z63A. It will be much easier to carry around, and the colorshine screen will make watching movies more enjoyable. If all you need is integrated graphics, there's really no reason to buy a laptop bigger than 14", unless you want a bigger screen for workspace. A 14" screen is great for watching movies, and it doesn't sound like you'll need the extra screen size for anything.

But if you're really set on a 15.4" widescreen sized notebook, look at the Z70A instead of the Z71A. It has a much better chassis than the Z71A does, and a better screen. Though neither are glaretype screens like the Z63A, which is what I recommend over the Z70A and the Z71A for your needs.

EDIT: Also, overclocking a notebook with integrated graphics is pretty pointless imo. The point of overclocking is to gain better performance in games, which you obviously won't be doing any of with integrated graphics. All you'll do overclocking is risk screwing up your hardware and voiding your warranty. There'll be no noticeable performance increase from overclocking on an integrated graphics notebook.

Overclocking is definitely not just for gaming. You don't understand the difference in compile times between a 1.6GH and 2.13GHz CPU.

Your correct, it is important to programmers (like me) that the pc has a fast processor or compile time on very large programs (code) will take a long time. Go grab and old IBM from the early 90s, and compile a code on it and then do it on a new pc now. There is a big difference; also how well you write the code will effect the compiler time as well.

I agree with both of you that a faster proccessor helps code compiling immensely. Sorry, should have included that too.

But the point I'm making here is that he won't need to OC his system for what he's doing. He never said he was compiling code or playing games, or doing anything that would gain significantly from OCing. If he's just doing what he described above, I don't see any reason to OC, which rules out one of the advantages of the Z70A or Z71A over the Z63A.
