Help me! MP3 player suggestion

I was searching ('search' feature) and didn't find anything down to the 6th page. So, I started this to ask for a recommendation on MP3 players that conforms to the following guidelines (from most important to less):

1) Very small
2) Very small
3) Replaceable batteries
4) Storage capacity
5) Long battery life
6) Price

That said, it probably needs to be a flash player (size). I want replaceable batteries because i do not want to have an exausted one after 3 months of use, and also something generic that i can just drag and drop files to it, so it must be usable without installing any thrash on my computer... I would like 1GB, if possible (price), but I can go with 512, since I want something cheap (compared to those 1000Gb ones), very portable, that can fit in a pocket easily, and I'm the guy that doesn't like a lot of musics (only a few - 100 to 150 - that I hear a lot). I've seen some players that accept SD cards for expansion, but, although i didn't see pictures, i believe they will be a little big to me. Anyway, I have almost (if any) knowledge about players, so i may be thinking wrong...

thanks!

highly suggest you check out the iriver and creative lineups. those 2 brands have always delived when it came to build quality, and most importantly, sound quality.

iPod Nano.

I could only find those at 2gb capacity (a.k.a. very expensive: ~ $190). And the nano, as I saw on newegg just now, has a color LCD, which is something I don't need at all and, imo, is only there to increase the price and is one more "breakable" thing. I want something as cheap as possible, without giving up on quality, that will deliver what it's intented to: plain old stereo music. No need for videos.

@abf: hi again! there are two players (all from creative) that I can probably buy. I've made a comparision, using Newegg's great web site, of 5 (3 creatives and two iRivers), so you can take a look at that to see what I'm talking about.

Right now, I'm going with the first one (MuVo TX FM English/France), unless you have some warning for me on those. It has FM radio, which is something I really want (i forgot to tell that) and seems very good. My only concern is about the display. Is it hard to see? Is it a backlit? Is it easy to look and read at day or night (edited: the zen nano seems to be good on that, for the pictures)? Obviously, can you answer me that... ?

Why not the iRiver? Price. I don't want to pay that much for a 512 player. That's it. The extra juice time (having AA instead of AAA batteries) is good, but don't compensate, for me. The ability to play ogg is a tentation, but I almost don't have those, and it's not something LameFE can't do.

Why not the Zen Nano? it doesn't have radio (fm tuner). newegg says nothing about it, and creative's site says it does. However, the creative site is about the zen nano plus, not zen nano (which is the one newegg has). Does it have fm tuner or not? On creative's site, there is no page about the zen nano, only for zen nano plus, and that makes me wonder if they are the same product (the plus beeing the 1gb model, instead of 512)...

thanks!

I have an old 256 Muvo TX (replaced it with a Nano - wanted more capacity, just not 20 gigs worth) and its a very well designed piece of kit. You do have to replace the batteries, but they last for ages. The display is pretty much Crystal Clear (think like a Calculator LCD, but with a backlight) and the interface is very well implemented (kudos to Creative for squeezing something easy to use a intuitive onto that small a screen)

Actually I can't really fault it, beyond some minor quibbles.

Firstly - The battery readout is kind of unreliable. It will stay on full for about 95% of the time and suddenly plummet (you find yourself carrying spares when travelling etc)
Secondly - The Battery Cover on the back is badly designed (kept coming out when I was handling it), that is to say it went missing after a week and I never found it. However the battery is pretty firmly in, and its only really a cosmetic issue.
Thirdly - I don't know if I sat on it or what (It is pretty tiny) but I cracked the LCD. That is to say I cracked the protective plastic, the screen works fine.

So yeah - I would say get it.

It's great to hear from someone that had one. what's your feeling about the FM radio tuner? i've read that it won't be that good (antenna beeing small??)... and some people considered it more like a plus than something they really looked for. Another issue I've found on net was about a small noise that could be heard when the backlit was on. Do you have that problem?

About the Zen Nano: they really don't have FM tuner. The "plus" name is not for the capacity. Right now, I'm going for the MuVo TX FM. I'm not that excited about the blue color (seems to be the one of the worse), which is the only one newegg has, but I don't mind about comestic issues...

The FM tuner wasn't really something I was actually after. I don't listen to that much radio, and I'm finding that Podcasts are a fairly addictive alternative these days. It was ok, and thats about it. I'm in a fairly good signal area though, so if your at the bottom of a valley or something I wouldn't expect too much of it.

I never noticed a noise when the backlight was on.

Go with Creative. Stay away from Iriver.

Thanks eskimo_socks, I will probably buy the TX FM. It's not that I live in a desert or in a farm . Instead, I was thinking about some reviews on the net (common buyers). I believe I won't have problems with it.

@zenguy: I do appreciate your opinion, but when you don't tell why, it's not that informative... I won't buy any iRiver for the price ...

Throwing in a late suggestion, what about the JetAudio iAudio5 series?

512mb: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16855603817

1gig: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16855603818

I have the 2 gig version, it sounds great and the display is very easy to read and the option to set different modes to different colors is very nice. However, the FM reception isn't the greatest, but it should be ok if you're in a metro area.

I say stay away from Iriver because the interface and battery life is terrible. Accessories are more plentiful and cheaper for Creative players.

Excellent one!

@plageclochard: It seems very, very nice, and all reviews tell that the sound quality very good ("excellent/exceptional" on CNET). ogg capability, multicolor lcd (not necessary, but why not?), info-rich LCD, and promises good sound.

@Revenent: He already said on his 2nd answer.

Ooops - bad me. Really havin' a bad post-reading weekend.

And actually, I have the iRiver H-140 (really old), and the interface has a bit of a learning curve, and it has a 16 hour battery life (I tested at 8/40, 160 kbps average, MP3 only), ~3 hour charge time over USB. I'm not sure what bad battery life is according to zenguy.

My Iriver H10 5GB claims to have 12 hours but I barely get 6 hours out of it. I have to reformat my player once a month. They force you to make all playlist on your pc. You have to select track by track if you want a spur of the moment playlist. There is no easy and quick way to play two artist. On my old Creative Zen Xtra player, all I would have to do is select artist 1, click add, select artist 2, click add and I would have a little playlist made on the fly.

what are you smokin? the fact that your specific H10 model might be a lemon does not give you the right to discredit iriver as a company. to solve the battery issue, upgrade your firmware. my H320 should get in the ballpark of 16 hours according to iriver and in ideal conditions it does (with my settings it gets about 12, but thats due to me using 192 vbr ogg instead of 128 mp3 and having me EQ setup for good bass.) A new firmware might also fix your crashing problem. I have never had to reformat my h320 and thats with 3 different firmwares that i had on it. (1.02 US, 1.25K, 1.28K)

My Iriver is not a lemon. It happens to everyone who owns the unit. Check out the poll above with the battery life.

whatever you do, dont get an iPod
why not - I have a nano and love it.

However since the guy said he really wanted FM radio, and none of the ipods come with FM radio, then you must be an idiot - or maybe you didn't read the bloody thread did you.

A mate of mine has the Iriver H10 (or something like that, actually it might be a 320), and despite the fact that its a fugly beast, he's very happy with it (the dual headphone sockets outs are pretty neat)
