Extreme 6800Go Ultra Modding Part 1

Ok, well I had this thought to remove (maybe can just leave them) the memory thermal pads on the stock 6800Go Ultra heatsink and repace it with copper strips held on with some AS5 and lovin. Basically here is a pic of what I could be doing soon. Of course copper strips will be on each side of the card.

Give me input.

all i can say is good luck. hope you post results.

Won't do jack, memory doesnt respond to cooling much better if voltage stays the same, and that bit of cooling won't be much :/. If you're looking for ways to mod it, however, hack the shit out of the actual metal cover and stick RAM sinks on the chips themselves, this will also open up all that and get some air circulating around the core, a 2 for 1 . You could also stick some on the mosfets as well. Other than that, try sticking a passive heatsink right on top of the beginning of the heat pipes to take some immediate heat off them.

I don't think it's worth removing the pads. Adding the copper strips will still cool it down more efficiently but I don't think it'd be worth the trouble to take off the current pads that are on there... even if you volt mod the ram to send more voltage to it, it won't be anything that the pads would hinder if you left them on there imho.

Either way, good luck and post the results I'm getting a 6800 go (Vanillia ) in a week or so and it'd be interesting to see how that turns out.

Well I can take the memory up to 650 (1300DDR) from 530(1060DDR) without a problem but more would be nicer.

Don't think it'll do much.

If you're gonna remove the pads and stick the copper on there, I'd be wary about using an epoxy like artic ceramique (I know you said AS5). I used ram sinks on my 9800 pro in my water-cooled desktop and when I was researching it I read a lot of cases where people pulled off the whole RAM chip when trying to remove the sink at a later time (I did a lot of research on ocforums.com). If I was gonna do what you're attemption I'd use AS5 (like you mentioned) and dab some super glue in the corners of the copper where it attaches to the memory... that way you get the best possible contact but it's not impossible to remove if need be.

Are you going to attach some type of makeshift heat-pipe somehow to draw some of the heat away from the RAM?

Never thought about that, but i'm sure I could use some copper and route it to the orignal heatpipe for the GPU.

Good Luck

I sold my desktop so I'd get away from doing stuff like this, and it's reading stuff like this that makes me want to do crazy stuff to my laptop...

anyhow, without a way to remove the heat from the heatspreaders the only thing you're doing is prolonging the amount of time it takes for the ram to heat up to an unstable point (assuming you're trying to push it as hard as you can). It'll just make it take that much longer to heat up.

I think the point was for the Copper to be in contact with both the RAM, and the HS.

All in all, looks sweet

(P.S. A heatpipe is NOT a solid copper tube, it's a vacuum sealed copper tube with gasses/liquid inside of it, that when heated the liquid/gasses move to the top, then back to the bottom when cooled)

waiwiaiwaiawit...........it's this about cooling the Go 6800 Ultra?
is there enough space to fit some heatsinks over there? i think some heatsinks + as5 would do good....
need better air movement.

man has anyone ran with the keyboard off... holy crap that entire GPU heatsink gets hot. starting to doubt my 'extreme modding'.
Hmm Ive reached an all time idle low temp. 42c no AS5 no mods do have a Pacific breeze cooler and the windows open tho....

W00t GL to ya mate! Why not just take the keyboard off and install watercooling (KingWin AquaStar AS-3000) for both the CPU and GPU, then plug in an external keyboard and mouse "Shoman turns ultimate mobile gaming rig back into desktop"

Well whatever you do hope you find a way to increase our XPS's performance EVEN MORE!

*BTW Can someone tell me what the average idle and load temps are for the 6800 Ultra without any mods or cooling?*

shoman24v, youre crazy, I see allyou threads about extreme modding. I couldnt or wouldnt even think of software overclocking my 6800go. btw have you tried looking or know any mod for the fan? maybe something a little bit stronger/silent?

buy a 7800go. that'll should do the trick.
