"Virtually none of the "Name Brand" manufacture their own laptops. The few notable exceptions are IBM, Acer, Toshiba, Twinhead and Apple. Yet, even Toshiba and Apple do not make all of their own. All of the rest buy their laptops from what is called an Original Design Manufacturer (ODM).
"ODMs are the true manufacturers who actually cast, and assemble the main unit which includes the motherboard, outside casing, and display. A few examples of ODMs are Quanta, Compal, Clevo, Mitac, Asus, AOPEN (Acer), Uniwill, and TwinHead-- perhaps you have never heard of these companies before. But you have definitely seen their systems under other well known brand names. ODMs are usually located somewhere in Asia, and may have distribution centers in the US. ODMs distribute their product to Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs). Each ODM sells its computers to several different OEMs."

"An ODM named Compal (not to be confused with Compaq) makes some of the the DELL, Hewlett Packard and Compaq line of laptops--plus some others.
Quanta makes many of the Dell Latitude, IBM, and Sony Vaio laptops"

"DELL buys most of their systems from Aopen (Acer), Compal and Quanta."

Dell outsurce 100% of there laptops.

IBM doesnt produce its own laptops. Lenova makes IBM notebooks and IBM just puts their name on it.

This was published before the merger.

So what we learned is that Asus makes the best notebooks ever?

So does that mean I have to also dislike Compal, Quanta, and whatever else? Shit that's a lot of names to boycott.

The name is good to have but what really matters is where the parts come from. My DVD might be Matshita, but that's a name that belongs to Panasonic, so I'm down with it.

We've known this for quite a while.

Out of curiosity...does it matter? If Dell doesn't make their own stuff, but is still the best option on the market for the money, who cares who built it?

It's often a pain getting gear from those ODMs, and they often use other, less trustworthy people to distribute their products here...like Asus has in the past.

In any case, the bang for buck you get from Dell and, to a lesser extent, the other retailers, is well worth it.

Old news. Mentioned many time.

Powernotebooks.com even wrote up a nice article on it.

It is in the search

Worth reading would be the actual manufacturing, marketing, retailing, shipping, and policy cost per unit.
Honestly, after having spoken to several people at various Dell buldings around the world, (including an Indian named "Samuel"), I'm quite relieved that Dell outsources the manufacture of it's notebooks.

does it matter? more to consider, could be good or bad.
If it is still the best option for the money. Not it does not matter.

less trustworthy distributors do suck. Good ones like Mwave, Newegg, etc are good.

bang for buck from dell is worth considering yes.

No. THis is a FYI and a finger up to dell salesman. Ask dell sales about this.
When I ask tech questions, they get annoyed and asked me if I'm buying a laptop.

who really cares who makes it, if it fits my needs, and is in my pricerange and it looks kewl, i buy it. obviously motherboards, ram, screens, keyboards, are all made by different companies too, but that doesnt matter to me either. i dont care if dell got my next door neighbor to make my XPS2, its still what i wanted and its a great product!

I agree. There are many reason why ODMs don't publish those readings.
For instance, I worked at a company that designed and produced similar devices that basicly do the same thing for two competing firms: Nortel and Lucent (no comment ).

duh! It's always Made in China or Made in Taiwan. You can only pray that the quality control is up to standard.

Here's a question for all the naive such as the person who "discover" this new finding: If Nike can set up factory to abuse cheap labor in Asia, why not abuse some more with notebook manufacturing?

I was well aware of this before my purchase. Dell offered the best performance for the price, and the build quality on the XPS2 is amazing, no matter who built it.
