Hereby i want to confirm Henrik findings: As he mentionned it seems that there is no HW change between HT enabled and non HT enabled 56XX. I have today flashed my bios with Henrik Hybrid one but on a non HT p4 ( 2.4 C ). stupid hey ! Love to live dangerously.
So here are the facts. No xtra heat, no unstablility, and some very interesting messages confirming once again that ALL P4 are HT enabled, and that the only thing that makes them see it is the Intel (crypted) microcode resident in the CPU. If we had a way to chnage the microcodes to a HT aware one, even old 1.8 Ghz core p4 could be HT. But intel sure made sure no such tweaks were possible. Here is Debian linux with a kernel 2.6.0-test-11 patched reiser4 with all SMP / SMT / HT settings enabled, and here are the interesting reports:
