Internal Pre-N Notebook Card?

Does anybody know if such a thing exists - a pre-N mini PCI internal notebook card?

Nope they dont as they need multiple antenna's (mimo). Though when the spec gets ratified then there will be mini-pci's around.

That doesn't make sense tho. How many antenna do they need? My intel internal wireless card has two. Surely they could fit 3 or 4 if they really needed to.

Yep they could fit 3 or 4 or 5 etc in but that is up to the ODM's not the end user, though i suppose you could put antennas in the laptop case yourself but that would involve taking it completely apart.

The problem with incorporating antennas directly on the card is that it takes up a lot of space and would not really be beneficial as most of wireless cards are located at the bottom of the laptop case so reception wouldnt be that great.

Edit, forgot to make it clear that the n spec is almost certainly going to include multiple in multiple out (mimo) and so requires more than 2 antennas. Some have 3 or 4 antennas but the netgear pre-n have 7! I think its the more the better.

your internal mini-pci probably doesnt have 2 anntenna, if its like mine, its two connectors on two wires, though i think that the "wires" are actually just 1 wire that runs around the chassis and then comes back, helping to use the entire size of the case to be the antenna length (or atleast thats what it looked like when i got my motherboard replaced)

teh new napa chipsets for yonah will have improved wifi. not really sure what that means. i think all they are doing is slimming it down, but it might also give them the ability to make a pre-n card.

Yeah i'm using a pre-n or MIMO router at my place and those little LED's which are supposed to be antenna move around like it's going out of style. Apparently that's how much it switches around to try and get you the best signal. Great conversation piece.

I believe the new Samsung X20 and X25 have pre-n antennae built in. google it

I don't see any mention of pre-n on those Samsungs, but they do look like nice machines. But I've never heard anything about Samsung computers, are they any good?

I don't think you can buy samsungs notebooks in the US. They have a no-compete contract with dell who they supply lcd panels, monitors and the latitude X1 to.

The Samsung X50 looks like the ultimate Pentium M 15.4" lappy to me...1" thick, cool looking and sporting an x700. The only place that sells it in the US is www.dynamism.com.
