Thoughts on an HP notebooks from Sam's Club?

Howdy,

I was at Sam's Club and while casually browsing their electronics I noticed they have a ridiculous deal on extended warranty plans. Basically, 3-years full-coverage (even wear and tear) for $80. Now I have no idea how quick their service is, but if your laptop is your secondary computer, you can't beat that deal.

Anyhow, this computer caught my eye and I was wondering if I could get some feedback on it:

HP Pavilion zv6203cl
  • AMD Athlon™64 Processor with PowerNow!™ Technology (2.0GHz, 2000MHz system bus, L2 Cache: 512KB
  • 1024MB 333MHz DDR System Memory (2 Dimm) Max supported 2048MB
  • 2 Accessible Memory Slots
  • 80GB (4200RPM)hard drive
  • DVD±R/RW and CD-RW Combo Drive with Double Layer Support
  • Altec Lansing Audio
  • ATI RADEON® XPRESS200M IGP with 128MB DDR (dedicated)
  • Wireless Option 54g™ 802.11b/g WLAN with 125HSM / SpeedBooster support
  • 4 Universal Serial Bus USB 2.0
  • 15.4" HD BrightView Display
  • Dimensions: 1.8"H x 14.25"Wx 11.08"L (w/hinge)
  • Weight: 7.97 lbs.
  • Price $998.42
This is the only system I've found with 1024MB DDR, upgraded audio, and non-integrated graphics for around $1000. Spec-wise it is hands down superior to everything else I've been considering (mostly the Acers and Toshibas around $1000). Is there a catch? HP/Compaq kinda went into the crapper several years back -- are they good now?

Thanks!

Sam's club is evil. So is WalMart. See if you can find it somewhere else.

I would have to second this.... if you care at all for social consciousness, worker rights and fair compensation/benefits (ie "living wage"), the fact that WalMart/Sam's Club literally (and repeatedly) destroy small towns, and routinely cause tremendous traffic problems where built.... then spend more money, and buy from someone else..... Look on line.... I'm sure you can match the deal.....

If you actually don't know the truth about these things... google them..... This is a really nasty, greedy company

If you don't care about these things, and are only concerned about what's immediately best for YOU, personally --and definitely in the short term.... Welcome to Sam's world..... and that's on you.... but personally, I wouldn't want to be that kind of person.

Vote with your dollars

YMMV

Calm down. You need to get over it. I love Wal-Mart. Where else can you get almost everything you need for a good price?

I'd say the deal is pretty good. I mean, it's an HP, but they're definately not the worst out there.

I have to agree with all of the above and then some. I say then some because you are looking at a TWIN EVIL. points:
#1. the "new hp" doesnt give a single rat turd about workers, customers, shareholders anyone but themselves(proof
A. They lay off massive numbers (15k+ is massive in my book) in North America only to add more workers to India etc.
B. They don't support top of the line pocket pc's with OS updates (dell at least does).
C. HP support is mostly in india and my preference is to deal with support in North America as thats where I am from.
D. HP wouldn't even listen to the founders own son and went ahead with the compaq merger.
E. HP ignores BIG CORPORATE customers by outsource big $ item support to India.
F. HP ignores BIG CORPORATE customers by discontinuing support for their big unix boxes.
G. thru Z. insert your own reasons here.
#2. knowing the above...knowing that hp doesn't even care about big corporate customers who spend MILLIONS..why do you think they are gonna care about you and support you???
#3. knowing the other thread about how almost all notebook computers come from the same asian factory...why do you care about buying hp?
#4. Last time I checked there are more choices than ever for notebooks msi...asus...acer...etc.
#5. they already make enough $ off people on rip off priced ink cartridges.
#6. Knowing 1-5 and that most of it is valid and documented thru news sites (again do a google) why would you want to support such entities just to save $20 to $100???? And why would you want to be stuck with lousy support?
#7. three words: DONT DO IT!!!!!

Okay, okay, fine! You all will be pleased to know I'll probably go with a Toshiba from somewhere else.

toshiba is ok,
but there are many other choices...I don't think you can get AMD with tosh. if you are in a position to wait a while several dual cpu notebooks will be out in about 4-6 months from now.

Interesting discussion. I hear and agree with every thing regarding Walmart's low wages, its impact on urban planning, etc.

That said . . . I bought my T-41 over the internet, and I figure the only person who benefited locally in any way was the UPS (or was it Fedex ?) guy who delivered it. At least Walmart has local employees.

Thoughts ?

Yeah, there are a lot of choices, but I've done about a month's worth of research and I'm ready to commit. Unfortunately I don't have much more time, I'm about to go on a 5-week business trip and I can't go that long without a PC, lol. I'm not looking for a desktop replacement, just a "hotel notebook."

Tex simply asked about the deal with the laptop. The deal with the big evil Wal-Mart is irrelevant. I think the laptop is great for the price even though it is from Sams/walmart. If you can save a few hundred by shopping there then why not?

well he did ask for peoples opinion....
also people can save a few hundred by buying SUV's these days... that doesn't make that decision right either. Sometimes there is a bigger picture than saving $ in the short run.

Tex, if you think this is the best deal you can get, go for it. The fact that it is from Wal-Mart or Sam's Club has nothing to do with it. The other posters are just being stupid.

Just curious to know freak4dell what u do for a job??? Would you still feel the same way if you got laid off due to walmart and had to go work for them at 1/2 price??? A lot of other people have and Im sure they don't have too good feelings about these companies. Is it stupid to want to buy from entities who treat their customers and workers good???

I would be mad, but I am smart enough to realize that boycotting Wal-Mart does no good. Wal-Mart is a huge company, and they get more business than any of us could imagine. You have to realize that the people who are actually affected by this so called "evil" that Wal-Mart is bringing to the world are few in number when compared to the people who benefit from it. A few of us who are stubborn and decide to boycott Wal-Mart only succeed in looking foolish.

I don't know about where you live, but where I live, most of the employees of Wal-Mart are students who are just looking for a little extra money, whether it be for pleasure, or just to help around the house, or senior citizens who are also looking for a little extra money. Many of these people would not have jobs if it were not for Wal-Mart. Small local stores tend to be more selective in their hiring process than Wal-Mart. Also, Wal-Mart provides more jobs than any local store could offer. For those employees that desperately need the money, yet lack what small local stores want in their employees, Wal-Mart is a great place to work.

where I live they hire a lot of illegal non citizen people who are also "just looking for a little extra money"

first off, walmart is evil,

secondly, if youre going to spend that much money on a notebook, then at least get a decent one. that has a slow harddrive, weighs a ton, probably terrible battery life, bad lcd, crappy graphics.

check out the i6000 from dell. id recommend you buy your own ram and add it in yourself though cause it saves a lot of money. also, check you the coupons thread on this site for dell coupons.

Target, K-Mart, Fred Meyer...

One thing to keep in mind though - the models sold at Sam's Club and/or Costco are usually models made specifically for those companies. So when you go to the HP website looking for new drivers, support, etc., you might have to dig a little deeper than normal to find what you are looking for.
