In reply to one of my want ads here a member by the name arnio appeared saying he has a laptop like the one im looking for and wants $400 for it (his is broken and he said he bought another) . I replied with a counter offer and asked him for his info like name, address, phone number and since then he has flaked out on me. I feel like he was putting on a scam and just wanted to warn others about this. He wanted the transaction to go very fast but wouldnt tell me much. He may have been legit but something smells fishy to me and I dont like to just ship off a large amount of money to someone who cant give me his details. Anyways, just thought Id warn the others here to be careful of this person.

BUMP! Turns out I was right about this guy. Dont send this person any money! If you already have then file a complaint with paypal, your CC company and or your bank as well to get your money back.

Thanx for the heads up!

check out this thead: http://www.notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=112095

Seems like this scumbag is trying to scam people here.

Admins should ban his privileges on this forum. Wish it's similar to Anandtech forums because admins there take scamming seriously.

I think we need more mods here...

just report this kind of thing immediately...don't expect that we can read through all of the thread on the boards. We try but there's only so many hours in a day.

Thanks for the heads up guys...and remember, always be careful when dealing over the net. And nartac, we do take this kind of thing seriously...we're just not a $$ making machine like Anandtech so we cannot hire people to police this kind of thing...we're here because we love technology, not because Anand is paying us.

i wish there was not possible for thread starters to delete the threads unless they submit a request to mods here in the FS/FT forum. Arnio deleted his thread immediately after i sent the money but it may have helped others if they knew what other scams he was planning at the same time. if i knew he was selling 3 other laptops at the same time i would have stayed far and clear.

R Mutt, contact trollhunters.com and ic3.com. Trollhunters are great in helping you. Don't trust paypal to do anything for you because they won't. If this guy lives in the USA, he will either go to jail and spend his days with inmates who will love to get to his ass or pay restitution to a lot of people or both.

I agree as I always do a search on people im about to trade with to see if anyone has posted an experience so I can feel more at ease about a trade. I could only find one post by arnio and it was a reply where he bumped someones post.Had he not deleted his post i could have possibly emailed the person he was trading with to see how the transaction was going. Comeon mods, lets not let people delete their posts unless the request is looked at by a mod. If the mods are too busy then maybe they should consider crowning other peoples here to help with the job. Just an idea.

This is a copy of a pm I sent to a couple members here at NBF. This was in reply of a post that someone reported in the for sale forum. Instead of whining that nothing is done about these things How About you first send a private message to a moderator so that they are AWARE of it. For Sale forums have no responsibility for the deals that are made but if you contact a moderator they can assist you with information if any is available. Send me a private message for these things. I don't mind helping if I can.

It appears that there is a lot of similiar for sale deals popping up. Be on guard of deals under 500. Lately the range has been 300-400 dollars and the scammmer is pushing for a quick sale. slow down a little and dont hesitate to corner the seller with questions. a legit seller should have no problem with easing your mind.

Here is My Private Message Link:
Aurora Private Message

me pm link is also in my forum sig.

I recieved the report you made on a For Sale thread involving a notebook for 350$. I have banned that person and two other aliases he had that were not yet confirmed by this message board. Below is a summery of that.

All are the same person.
Reported as non-US FS scammer.
deleted FS Thread: FS: Dell Laptop
I found your thread dated 10-12-2005. The title is: Sticky: Avoid This Seller At All Costs!!!!!!!.

It is very important that you contact a forum moderator as soon as possible when this happens so that we can gather all of their info and give it to you in order to assist you in some form of recovery. I always help as much as I can. Notebookforums does not have any liability with regards to the use of the For Sale forum but I try to help at least sharing information that you would normally not have access to. Please contact me quickly in the future and if you use other forums and find yourself in this trouble, Contact the Moderator. In most cases they Will help.

I made your thread a sticky and posted the person email address that he used to register here at NBF. He has been Perma Banned.
