How to get the "Debug Port test set" and "Diagnostics Disk" ??

CJ Let me say what a GREAT Job you are doing here you and Everybody else..
Keep it up

I was working with notebooks 10 years ago and still have this hobby

I came across a Satellite 5205-S505 of a friend of mine and was trying to fix it.. It won't POST.. Well I have to say that this site was the most helpful in the internet

I'm willing to go to an extra step..

I want to have or make the "Debug Port test set" and also the "Diagnostics Disk" in order to be able to conduct the tests and fix the BIOS. I tried with no luck so I thought of asking the experts..

I think the "Diagnostics Disk" could be downloaded from the URL http://www.service.toshiba.com but I don't have a login. As for the "Debug Port test set" I'm guessing it is just a cros s-over serial cable.. I could be wrong

Any advice experts ??..

CJ, awesome work - its nice to see this kind of thing continually improve the toshiba forum

CJ,

The website is great! I wish I had the tools - and the temerity - to take my own A75 down. Certainly the instructions are clear and the pictures very helpful. As it is, it is really great to find that "I am not alone" in having this problem. (I'm still prolly taking my laptop in to an ASP, though.)

I need an LCD for a TE 2000. I am trying ebay but they are relatively expensive. There is also an option for a samsung replacement panel (LTN1$1XF-L02, VF2058P01). Any sugestions. I was able to get the repair manual on ebay to fix it.

Gents,
Anybody have any advice for me ??

Why dont you try to post this question as a new thread. Hijacking someone else's thread is not a good idea
post #170 of 281
saugen48 let me say that this was never my intention as I think this still goes with the manual usage!! .. Definately not "Hijacking"

Yet I have posted it in a new thread as I think it is not a bad idea. The new http://www.notebookforums.com/showth...70#post2158770 . Now I will wait for another comment on the duplicate entries ..

Cheers..

Cj2600,

Great site, very helpful.
Do you know if a satellite 1605 can be compared to any of the models you have on your site, in terms of disassemblage? I'm about to disassemble mine if I don't find a solution for it. My problem is described in this thread:

I would appretiate any help and thanks a lot for your site.

Hi cj2600, tovarish! (:-)

I read your words on the Toshiba Sabtellite P15. Unfortunately, they were only on fixing an overheating problem. I have heard that the problems many people get with the DVD refusing to recognise DVD-R/RW disks is caused by oxidation on the connector pins. Lightly cleaning them with fine sandpaper and/or electronic switch cleaner, solves the problem! However, you don't say how to remove the DVD drive for inspection or mention disassembling the laptop down to the motherboard. Is that coming? I assume that releasing the single screw deep in the hole near the DVD will allow it to be removed. Yes? Does one have to have that irritating torx 8 screw driver, which I don't have?

Thanks.

Sandpaper?... Better be a REAL fine sandpaper, better option is a pencil /ink pen eraser.

Torx 8 screw driver? which you don't have?

If you're messing around with stuff like this, buy the whole set at your local hardware store, they aren't that much. If you're in the USA.... (the country that people try to sneak INTO under the cover of darkness..). Sears-Craftsman tools for the money can't be beat...

To WeAreNotAlone

I agree absolutely. However, a proper electronic switch cleaner is far superior than the other two methods. It can be bought at Radio Shack for about $10 a can. Pencil erasers and suchlike have not always worked for me. It depends on the depth of the oxidation on the contacts. Here in Texas, there is always a lot of humidity which really calls for an after deposit of protection from more oxidation. So even sandpaper is a temporary solution at best, but it would quickly prove if one has solved the problem. Gently of course, and with a very fine paper as you say. My preference is a proper cleaner.

I was surprised by the number of reports on the internet of people using sandpaper and reporting their DVD now worked, when they were on the point of buying another unit! I guess Toshiba hasn't plated the contacts with gold.

I have not yet removed this DVD drive from the P15, has anybody already done so?

Hey, Cj2600,

I have workedon other older Toshiba laptops, but the Satellite P15-S479 has me stumped. I can't seem to find a way to remove the DVD drive. I have removed the keyboard and a bunch of screws underneath, but the DVD is still hard in there.
Any suggestions please?

Thanks,

Swamiji

DVD problem on satellite laptop solved.Sort of.......

I never did discover how to remove the DVD drive from the P15. I conclude that there must be a screw or 10 under the wireless card cover, since the Warranty people put a tag over the crack saying that removing it would void the warranty.
However, the real culprit turned out to be Windows XP SP2. The original software installed was SP1. Without realizing it, by installing SP2, I broke the DVD driver. After uninstalling Sp2 and reverting back to SP1, the DVD works again. Yippee!
That does mean of course that no updates from M$ can be accepted until this problem is solved by Toshiba/Microsoft. I intend to inform them.

So if your Satellite laptop reads CD's but not DVD's try taking out SP2.

Good Luck.

Toshiba 4030CDT 4.3 Hard Drive Upgrade.

Hello folks.

My first post here. Very nice site. Thanks!

This older laptop is in need of a bigger HD. It's my son's first laptop and actually is a real nice package and works great.

I need some help getting a bigger HD installed and the big thing is a "how to" remove the old drive and install the new drive. Once the old drive is out I can transfer the data to the new drive no problem. I just need to know the r+r steps.

Can anybody help me out here? Thanks

Andrew
