Buy the way, I replace Toshiba optical drives almost every day, but I never had a problem with drives they send to us. I never had to configur it. Just replace the drive and it works fine.
You said that you replace optical drives all the time. I have a Toshiba A35-S159 and I need to replace the drive. Do you have any instruction or pictures. I am not sure what I will get intowhen I start taking the screws out.

Thanks

If you wonder how to disassemble your Toshiba M70 - Look at some similiar notebooks. That's what I did. I had like two or three guides open looking through every part closely. You won't miss a thing except two more cables. One is like a "antenna" cable suited under your keyboard. The other one is a flat cable, like the keyboard one. Other from that... It's a peice of cake. Just remember to screw under the harddrive (i think it's a silver one). The panel over the keyboard can be a bitch... Start on the right side and move over to the left. When you think you can't bend it any longer... Try a screwdriver in the left end, might take a while.
Before removing the screen... don't forget to remove the black panel to the left of the keyboard.. You really need to get this WLAN antenna cables out.

If you want I can probably write a guide. If you do this at home... remember where the screws were. I didn't and now I'm holding 3 screws I don't know where they should be

Any idea how to disassemble a U200 for upgrade of CPU ?
You cant, they come pre-set.
Most of the optical drives on the market come as Cable select but most Toshiba laptops will only work with them as master. This place sells them as either cable select, slave or master. You are looking for the Toshiba ones with master at the end of the string

Hi Digg,

Great project, so that brings me to this ... [ Thx in advance ]

I have a 2 yr old Osmio F10 notebook [ have you operated on one or know of anybody that has ? ] ... that just went wonky. This is what happened > While reading the news the mouse/web page froze, couldn't escape sut down except to manually power it down by the Power Button.

After waiting 30 seconds or so unplugged & rebooting [ have tried both battery and AC it was plugged into the wall when this happened], then in a few seconds of the Qosmio flash screen appearing with the Intel Centrino logo appearing and the 4 bootable type icons on the bottom of the screen, the entire screen went into a series of paired dots from top to bottom & across the entire screen with the flashing cursor bar 2nd row down from the top left of the screen. Cannot boot F8 safe mode or to F12 to the recovery disc, it goes directly to this dotted screen immediately after the Qosmio flash screen ...

It's not the monitor as I hook it up to my PC monitor & get the same result.
It is scanned everyday for bugs as is mostly used by my wife for reasearch & medical study so I'm sure it's clean ...

I was told it might be the [Video Cd which is attached I understand to the mobo I understand ] or Motherboard ... If so, is it possible to get the Video Cd, or Motherboard off outta of the F10 easily & successfully & install a new one & how much are mobo's [ what model mobo ] for it ?

Also will all this destroy/erase all the data/info on my hard drive [ also would I be able to replace the hard drive current 5400prm 80GB HD with a new100GB 7200 rpm one & download the into/data onto the new installed one with out any problems, also would the higher speed HD cause too much heat inside or other issues will it be fine, ?

WOW, thx very much for taking the time & effort to read & reply to this, very much appreciated,

With regards in Desparation

You dont, you have to buy them that way, they are pre-set. You want one pre-set to master. Toshiba apparently likes their optical drives set to Master

Hello, I would be very thankful for your help. I have a problem with my Portege M400. Display glass (or whatever it is) is not assembled precisely enough and that's why the dust come in on between the display and the display glass. I want to disasseble the display panel, clean it and check for a spaces where the dust comes from. But Iam a bit affraid to try dissasemble it myself. Could you please give my some hints or short tutorial how to dissamble the display panel? Thanks for any help.

what size is torx security screw on Qosmio G25?

Great job on your site. Need to change dvdrw drive on my G25. Your site is the only info i could find. Just stuck on that torx screw located at the battery slot. The smallest torx i've got is a T8. i'll need to order the correct size. Could you say what size Torx it is?
My volume control knob does'nt work either. this seems to be prevalent with this model. if suitable i'll send you some notes on that.

When you get your replacement optical drive (DVDRW) make sure it is preset to Master as that is what Toshiba laptops can only use.
You cannot change settings on them, you must buy them set that way.
Go thru this link, it may be helpful in your disassembly:

Have decided to go with the Pioneer DVR-K06. it is available as 'Master' and can be flashed to be region free. (Really wanna stay away from Panasonic/Matshita).
I'd better explain further. the second screw from left in the bottom row in step 3 from the http://www.irisvista.com/tech/laptop...ing-fans-1.htm is not a phillip head. It is a special torx with a stub in the center. the screw driver must have a depression in order to fit. its called a security torx/ tamper resistant torx. my kit's smallest size is a T8. The toshiba needs a smaller size. I'd like to verify the size so that i can order it.
its very small and i probably wont find it here (In the caribbean). so i'll be fedxing it in.

You can try using a jewellers screwdriver set (flat blade) very small to fit between the ridges. This will work. make sure its a tight fit and doesnt slip

THANK YOU saugen48 .
You got me thinking in the right direction. Used my dremel tool (with drill press stand for steadiness), to grind a smidgen off the center hub. that was enough to get sufficient purchase with a 1.2mm precision flat to remove it.
Of course will be replacing with a standard head screw.
Thanks again.

Glad its working for you

I like your website. I have a questin. My 2.5 year old Toshiba Satellite M45 series has an unrepairable LCD. I sent it to a certified Toshiba repair company and they would charge me over $800.00. I, of course, will not pay this. I can get another laptop for less than that. Is it a good idea to buy a new screen and using your instructions replace the screen myself? The worst that can happen is that the screen still will not work and I'll end up getting a new computer. As it is now, I use an external monitor to it. Not why I bought a laptop. If I had wanted a desktop, I would have bought one. Do you think replacing the screen myself might be a good idea?

Have found the hard drive. Toshiba 1135 look on the bottom just back of the cd/dvd drive is a screw marked F5. Remove the screw slide the drive towards you and there is the hard drive simple now that i found the darn thing. Hope this helps someone else.

Howto correctly remove and open a Toshiba M70

Hello!

I was wondering if anyone could tell me how i can remove my keyboard and open my computer safely. I just spilled my drink into the computer, i turned it off, removed the battery and just spend the last 10 min tyring to dry it with a blow-dryer.

Is there anything else i could do? I'm gonna wait a couple of days before turning it on again, if that doesn't work, i'll open it and try to clean it.

I've got a toshiba M70-148, and would REALLY apperciate your help!

Thanks, PAMF

turn it upside down and let it dry (really dry) and pray that the spilling had not got to the board underneath the kboard.

cheers ...
