Windows XP Logon

Hi all,

I'm not to sure if this is the right spot on these boards for this post but i'll try it anyway.

Well i've just got a new laptop and it hasnt been a good start, had problems formating the hard drive (not techinical just user probs!) and now i have installed windows XP and im having probs with that too, so i wondered if anybody could help?

I got hold of a copy of XP and installed it, everything was fine. Boots up first time and it has the logon screen with my name on it and asks for a password to continue! I have never entered a password.

I then restarted the computer in safe mode (so i could change the password). Again i get the logon screen, this time with the Administror logon aswell as my own. Tried to login as the administrsator and i can't., as it asks for a password. I never set up a password for the administrator account!

I have pressed Control-Alt-Delete twice aswell and tried to logon in as administrator using that method, i have tried leaving the password blank here to but it still wont let me logon.

I also keep getting a logon message that reads

"The system cannot log you on due to the following error:

The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contatcted

Please try again or consult your system administrator"

So guys please give us a hand here and let me know how i can logon on to my computer and change these flamin passwords.

Many thanks[/b]

It sounds like you've somehow attached the pc to a domain. As in an active directory domain. See if when you come into the logon screen you can hit the options button and then on the bottom drop down menu select logon: "Computer name here" (this computer).

Thanks digitalpunk for the input but when i get to the logon screen all i have is My name, which i can click enter a password (even though i never set one up. I also have the Administrator above my name, again i can click on it and attempt a password that i never setup.

There are no options buttons available or an option to click "Computer name here" (this computer).

Any more ideas?

Thanks for the help so far

You set the administrator password when installing Windows, unless your copy is not original in some way (by not original I don't mean pirate, I mean some kind of OEM version that will change the password automatically to something). If the installation process didn't ask you for a password (both for the 'Administrator' and for the user you created), it's probably some weird OEM CD.

edit: the administrator password is set very early in the installation process, + or - when you are asked about the network settings. After the second (I mean, the last one) reboot, you are asked to register on Microsoft and, finally, there is a blue screen that asks you for the user names. It will _not_ ask for a password. You must create one in Control Panel->User Accounts. So, if you already have a password you didn't set, i believe your CD is a non default one.

About domains... I never set them on the installation process... I just already had some strange problems, and that's why I will only set them when the installation is finished and everything is OK .

there as a program that will allow you to boot to a dos like setup where you can change the hash of the admin (or any user's) password and then restart.

this wont allow you to see the password that is currently there, but it will allow you to blank (make no password), or put in a new password

have you tried just pressing <enter> when it asks you for a password? Depending on your login screen, if you never entered a password to begin with the password is blank. Just hit enter to continue with login.

This whole thing sounds fishy. No installation of xp sets up a password for you. If he installed it then he would be able to get in. Sounds like he is trying to get into someone else's computer that was part of a domain.

what, youve never done a 100th install of windows on someones machine (or your own) and your watching a movie or doing something else at the same time and you forget what you typed it (or were just drunk when you did it) b/c you were on "auto pilot" and when you got to the login you were like, oh sh1t...

or maybe ive just had to reinstall 1 too many machines @ work...

Uhh, no I don't get drunk and install Windows XP. Sounds like a personal problem. If you have done an install of xp you would know that you have to create an initial user and it has no password. You would have to go into accounts and create a password. And, I have installed xp at work and home more than a hundred times and I don't forget the passwords.

try doing 4 reinstalls @ the same time on a KVM and tell me that you dont forget which one you are on...

I've checked around, and the only way you'd have a password set on a XP installation without having a floppy/USB key inserted would be to have a customized CD with a customized OEMSETUP.inf/sif file.

And if you've got it to a domain setup, I'd say you've got it off some company's IT department. If that's the case, then you better contact the IT department and get them to reset the passwords for you.

Of course, if you can't do that, then I think you better just go buy a copy of XP for your own use.

everyone is so quick to judge, I agree it MIGHT be a OEMSETUP.inf/sif file issue, but i've had NEW direct from M$ cd's do this to me. (beta 1/rc2/RTM versions of XP and my beta1 vista) it happens sometimes to to a error of somesort at the wrong time of install, or just a scratch in the wrong place on the CD, you never know. the best solution is to reinstall windows, and IF your doing something "Fishy" then stop, because you already have gone farther than your knowdge allows.. OR you can use that tool, the issue of "log onto this computer" button is that windowsXP welcome screen/logon doesn't have that enabled, it's "classic" mode that has it..

I don't forget which one I am on. I am able to multitask sober.

I've had that problem happen to me when I forgot my password and (trying to salvage my data) attempted to 'repair' the current installation instead of making a brand new one.
If this is the case (and I'm not implying that you're trying to break into someone elses box), just run a partitioing suite (they have emergency disk that you make for these kind of situations) and partition off a section of the disk that big enough to house a new installation, make a new install, then copy over your crap from the old install and run PM (or whatever) again to regain the wasted space, merge the 2 partitions ......whatever.

Hope this helps.
