fan quieting tutorial please - Page 3

I'm still not sure what your referencing (I've never bought an LCD monitor), but would it really matter if the fan were suspended some above the mobo hole? it's still sucking air from somewhere and blowing, right? I've noticed that when I lift the fan probably a smidge less than a cm above the mobo, the noise level goes down at least 50% if not more like 75%...

There are two reasons why the noise level goes down when you hold the fan.
Firstly your fingers act as shock absorbers.
Secondly and most importantly you have removed the resonance connection between the fan and the mobo. Hence why the noise drops dramatically. As soon as the fan can come into direct mechanical contact with the mobo it starts to resonate - hence the noise. The idea of the thin material is to act like your fingers do whilst not elevating the fan too much above its original position so it still blows air across the memory stick.

I chose the thin packing material because it was easier to work with than the material Rondo had and produced the same effect.

As I have suggested go to a local computer shop I am sure they will have a truck load of the stuff out the back. All you need is a small square of it as per my previous instructions.

the fan almost sounds like a vacuum, even when I am holding it, when it's within a certain proximity of the mobo hole..

wow, sounds like we need to find a manufacturer that can make a decent fan! I haven't done this mod yet (too busy playing with my new wireless network!), but one more quick question- does it only turn on when the main fans turn on? Or is it always on?
it comes on at the same time as the other two

James it is no so much needing a better manufacturer as needing a better mounting or having a much more expensive perfectly balanced fan put in there. I would go with the first option. All fans vibrate at some frequency no matter how good they are. Shock mounting is by far the better way to go imho.

Aussie, this sounds like an awesome mod. I *think* I know the kind of material you mean and will try to find some. My only question is what are the chances of the fan sliding or shifting as it's not being held in place by screws? I carry my 8890 around a lot in a backpack.

And any chance of a picture tutorial? I've never ventured into modding anything - let alone a laptop. So even getting to the fan could take me some time and research to figure out. I'd just assume follow your (clearly professional ) advice.

The fan is not able to move once you pack it in. The heat spreader holds it in place so even in a backpack it will still not shift. My 8890 gets carried around all over the place and the only problem I have had since the mod is trying to hear if the fans come on at all - talk about paranoid. My room fan makes more noise than my 8890 now .

If I had a digital camera I would post some pics but I don't own one (one of the few electronic gadgets I don't own).

You will be ok, just follow the directions and remember to be patient and careful.

Ok Aussie, I couldn't get a hold of any of that material. What I did get is a piece of that non-slip stuff. It's a little thicker and it's got holes in it, but I thought it'd work just as well. I did the mod and it is significantly quieter, but it doesn't seem to be as quiet as you made yours out to be. I'll keep trying to get some of that packing material... any chance you got some laying around?! Maybe you could send me some for a late Christmas present

Hi guys,
I hear you. I haven't had a chance to go down to my local computer store and pick up some of the stuff. I do have some (stupidly I threw out the left over piece I cut my original from) but I don't want to cut it up because it is the packing material for my external LCD.

I will get down there and when I do I will post back here for anyone who wants a piece posted to them (assuming postage is not too expensive back to the US). That aside, try some other computer stores, I am sure they have it. Most screens have it as a packing cover to stop dust and scratches.

I did try - I live in a little dinko town and the only computer shop said they never got anything with that stuff on it. I realised they use the same stuff to pad padded envelopes, but they stuck the stuff down so well, I couldn't get it up. For now, this non-slip mesh stuff is working, but it's a little thicker than I was hoping for. That'd rock if you find some! P.S. Neighbours and Fosters rule!

We export those (Neighbours is a soapie about a ficticious Australian street for those lucky enough never to have seen or heard about it) because we don't want them here .

Compared to real Australian beer Fosters is a last resort. You should try Victoria Bitter (VB) if you can get some. Nectar of the Gods.

As to Neighbours - well the best thing to come out of that was Kylie's bum (Kylie Minogue that is). It was were she got her start. I don't know if you have seen the video clip for her song "Can't get you out of my mind" but she looks awesome in the white dress (?) she has on (half off). Somehow I don't think the American's could cope - particularly after Janet Jackson .

Agreed. Though Holly Valance is way hotter than Kylie... Maybe it's the age thing... I'm only 20. And I've never heard of VB - I worked at a bar in England when I was there and Fosters kinda grew on me. Now being back in the states, the legal age is 21 - sometimes life just isn't fair.

But seriously, I loved Neighbours. So cheesy you could watch every day just to kill off those unnecessary brain cells.

Here in the US mate you cant get any Aussie beers cept Fosters ... and I dont really consider that beer. Its breaking my friggin heart - not to mention ruining my beer drinking experience. I wonder if we could set up some sort of exchange program for beer
post #55 of 83
As you know mate we keep all the good stuff to ourselves .
Man I wish I could do this but when I popped the keyboard out I found a couple of the screws holding in the heatshield were not in good condition, like the assembler overdid it putting them in. My precision screwdrivers can't get a hold there at all.

It's a real shame because the whining noise now irritates the bejaysus out of me and disturbs other people when the fans come on in the library, so I have to use my old laptop, making my 8890 mostly a $3,000 paperweight, which provokes me into thoughts of violence against it when I pass the useless bastard on the way out in the morning.

I stay in an european country were we have over 6000 beer breweries. Even I'am not an expert in this domain, I believe that here that kangaroo beer wouldn't even count as beer. - However, at least Fosters and Lager should be also well known outside of Autralia, even as mentioned before we europeans believe it's the reason why kangaroo jump at all...

Well, never mind just a boring joke, so...

That with the screws sounds bad... but maybe you can find some way to get them peacefully out (...cut in deeper holds into the screws or the like...) and replace them with screws which are in good condition. AFAIK most Clevo resellers (in your case Sager...) should have a bunch of screw sets for the Clevos they are assembling and selling, so they should be able to send you some of the needed ones.

I've finally got a chance to try this fan mod thing out for myself, but I dont have any of that ideal foam that aussie suggests. So I've got a question about a possible alternative, balloon rubber, dont laugh. It's not as neat as the foam but it seems to have the right mechanical properties. My concern is its reaction to the heat of the laptop, I certainly wouldnt want it to melt all over the motherboard. Anyone think there could be a problem here?
It could deteriorate over time dude due to the heat that is in there.
I must apologise to all those that have asked me for some of this "wonder foam sheeting". I have yet to go down the the computer store and grab some.
I can't believe people cannot find this stuff. Electronics gear is wrapped in it all the time, particularly LCD panels. My Samsung 193T was covered in a bag of the stuff along with the power cord being wrapped in it (which is where I cut my small piece from - but then stupidly threw out the rest ).

I will go to the geek store soon so for those waiting just hang on. What I might do is send some to Adam over at PC Torque so he can distribute/obtain it for anyone interested.
