5320-V Review

Nicely packaged the 5320 came direct from Sager on time. Although I ad looked at the pictures online the first point that struck me was looking down in to the box. After seeing a co-workers Dell XPS, I thought, that’s thin. Then I pulled it out and the full size was apparent. Its definitely got some mass, but mostly in its length side-to-side.

Being used to business laptops it has a much smoother look and I like it a lot. Not shiny, not flashy but slick. And I like the look of the front panel, keyboard has satisfying spring and I find it easy to type on. But enough esthetics lets get down to brass tacks….

Since I was traveling immediately upon receipt of the laptop I plugged it in for an hour and took off. At 7:50 I cranked it up and started playing/installing. I figured I would hold off on any benchmarks till it was plugged in. The screen was sufficiently bright to type by in an unlit car at night so I know the battery was getting at least some work, plus near constant running of the cd. The battery lasted until……..9:20 when it claimed 33% remaining. So at least 1.5-2 hours, probably more but the wife is wanting the light off in the car so we move on. Sorry to those who wanted more on battery life but I am satisfied with this.

Here is the inside you can see the memory, hard drive, battery slot and the sadly empty connectors for bluetooth and the tv tuner module.

And here is a shot of the desktop with dual.jpg that another member here was kind enough to post for us:

Super PI modded 1.4

PI to 2 million run #1= 1 minute 34.329 seconds
PI to 4 million run #1= 3 minutes 35.062

Now let me close all the background apps….

PI to 2 million run #2= higher value…that does not make sense, oh well the diff was in a couple 10th’s of second. Good enough here.

A small note as I have been using the machine. Some small delays that I would not have expected. Trying to play mp3’s I burned to dvd lagged till I put it on the harddrive. Not a major problem but still….

Now lets run some 3dmark03-05

03- 6195 no idea what that means as there is no internet access here, hope its good, oh yeah, almost forgot when 3d mark kicked in so did the fan. An otherwise totally quiet machine kicked into high gear. This looks pretty nice, nothing special but colorful. I know they are testing the underlying engines and she seems to be doing well, at least it looks sweet on the screen.

05- 2766 I could see this one was not running so well but I had to know. I’m guessing that’s an extremely weak showing.

But forget about the benchmarks lets game!!!!

Farcry Anyone?
Ok boys and girls, I have to say that while Farcry is only running on the medium setting, The screen is clear but with that non glossy matte finish. Good angle viewing. Getting frame rates of 90-180. Admittedly at medium but it still looks glorious, an the more I get used to this screen the more I fall in love with it. I run a 21 inch Sony trin flat screen, super juicy weighs about 80 lbs, at home and this has clarity unbelievable. The Sony may push some brighter more vivid colors but this rig is sweet.

Looks like a might be getting the machine I wanted. A sweet, low-energy processor that talks to its ram like ricochet rabbit tied to (8) Pipelines cruising well through the PCI express. Whats all that mean? It means while I have many other things I should be doing, like going to sleep, I am to hooked on this shiny new toy. I needs must know its true power!!

A LITTLE Painkiller never hurt anybody! With framerates running 70-90 much pain will be delivered! This is at max except for all shadows and AA. When I ran those at max it disappointed a little by only producing 40-60 fps. Still, we are looking at a bobw (best of both worlds) machine here. This will turn heads at the board meeting and still kick booty at the LAN.

Some game pics plus a alt/print screen capture:

err, forgot the cd

Conclusion!?! Hell no I aint done yet. But, kind sirs and madams, I beg your indulgence. ALL posted scores and times are straight from the box. Obviously, apps were installed, plus anti-virus and office xp. Just giving you the true 411.

In order to truly test this machine properly I know need to update drivers and let the tweaking begin.

(Have updated all drivers and get approx 50-100 more 3d03 marks 10/15/05)

Please send me any suggestions for improving the running of this machine.
I am looking for any suggestions as to how we can get these scores higher. Some ideas, new drivers, software tweaks, even some hardware oc, if its safe. Errr, safe enough?

Plus some feedback as to how I am doing here. Missing any request? Any new ideas you want tried?

Any suggestions greatly appreciated
Any feedback most useful
Any bitching please keep to yourself, I am just trying to help

Been Using a while now and I have a couple of gripes. I would at least like a small led light, variable lumens, or even a true backlit keyboard to work with. This machine is not on the cheap end of things so I don’t feel out of line saying so. I have been having all kinds of problems with the garbage internet this hotel provides and calls it high-speed. That’s whatever, but the way it is handled by this machine has not been great. It loses the signal than gets it back and the software goes a little crazy. Twice I have been forced to re-boot to get the wireless up and running. While I am sure much of the problem exists with the wireless, it is noticeable and annoying. Certainly not a deal killer but you will notice it.
Next, I think I mentioned this but it happened again. Trying to play mp3 from dvd and media player 10 locked up, once forcing a reboot, the rest I was able to stop the process and move the file to desktop and all was well.

Some additional stuff has been added in this thread so keep reading!!

Conclusion:

This might not be the machine for you. If you want a tiny powerless, calculator of a laptop then be my guest. If you seek Crom god of steel to wield from your 10-15 lb DTR, by all means get yur gank on. But if you seek a powerful machine able to handle all todays apps, most of todays games (and quite a few from the next year or so) this sleek, PLASTIC (do you really care?) Machine has great potential to rock your world. Under it shiny exterior lies some seriously powerful machinery. My desktop can beat it, but its close in the rear view mirror.
A little more work on my part to fully understand the machine, its potential and how to take it there and I feel this will provides hours of gaming joy, school papers and productivity applications at their finest, portabilist (not quite) and in an extremely eye-satisfying package to boot.

I like it, go buy ten.

The End

seems to be running smoother now that I am home but I am 5 feet from the router. Still not all I had hoped, surfing the net has lag, how do they expect me to game like this? 802.11g 54megs should be unnoticable diff from 10/100 direct connect.

I have been on a wirred workstation for a long time so my expectations are high. And I am looking for the stuff that aggravates me so I can let others know what I have had happen and compare it with their results.

your welcome.

Just wanted to add that teh Sager beat my desktop in Super PI by over 8 seconds and in FutureMark 03 6160 to 6080. I cant get any comp's online but I was pretty surprised.

I take back all the bad things I said.....

How's the wireless work at home further than 5 ft. away? That's not normal at all. Have you tried reinstalling the drivers or looking for updated ones? (if you answered those and I skimmed past them on mistake, forgive me).

I have connection issues somewhat similar to that at work (or at least had when my 8790 was alive). I've got two walls between me and the router, so I get intermittent signal. But w/ yours, 5 ft.? That sounds like a problem.

well, I am about 25 feet from the transmitter and one wall and it seems to decent....I also updated 915 chipset drivers and the intel pro wireless. I will try some gaming later from this distance and see how it works

hows the build? is the casing made out of metal or plastic.....does it seem sturdy and heavy duty?

Hmmm, it is plastic and the screen is super thin so I worry a little about that. Its definitely no toughbook, Howver I think it will handle being shoved in a back pack with 30 lbs in books just fine. Now that I look at ait the top does have amettalic feel., so mamaybe the top surface wrapped around the screen is metal. I wont really know till a few weeks down the road though. Nothing like true product testing to get this particular answer.

The LCD back(top) cover is metallic.

how's the screen?

will you post some pics of the scren with apps and games?

does it feel heavy? does it uncomfortably run hot when gaming?

congrats on your laptop!

Any updates as far as the pictures? This model is one that I'm really looking into buying but I want to see the brightness and viewing angles before I commit 2000 bucks! Thanks for the great review!!

OK, I have the images on imageshack and will be posting them in the review thsi weekend. I have some negative stiff to report, and for those of you getting this as well please let me know if you have a similar issue. The keyboard in the upper left hand corner is coming up form the laptop about .25 of an inch. It might just need to be snapped back in but I am scared to press to hard on it. Dont wnat to break a week old machine! Second when I use the headphone jack up front-right hand side I get alot of noise in the headphones including this bizarre cricket like noise. It is regular about one every 2 seconds, cricket noises that is. I have left a message with Sager (Midern) support although it is Friday at 5 pm and I will be letting you all know how my experience is. While neither of these issues prevents me from using the computer I paid to much to let it go.

I hope they treat me right and make me feel justified in not buying a Dell!!
well, if the headphone problem is not solved, you can buy a usb soundcard off of newegg for 25 dollars and that should fix it. far from a perfect solution, but its better than nothing.

and BTW, both dell laptops in my house have the same problem, so its not just a sager issue.
For the headphone problem, if your headphones have their own volume setting, turn that down a bit. Use the volume controls on the front of the laptop to increase volume. My personal gripe with the sound is that the microphone is way too quiet.

My other big problems with the 5320 are some unresponsive keys and the heat when running full load. I'm sure I'll get used to both of these before long ;p.

Thanks for the responses, I will look for headphone seetings in both MS and the Realtek controller. Are you all having any issues with the keyboard? It seems that the whole thing can just pop off (I have not tried this!!!) and will come loose from just typing. Admittedly I am a heavy typer but I dont pound the keys.

Drizek, why would I want an external soundcard? The point of the lappy is to elimanate extras. I know that motherboard bound cards dont deliver the performance of add-on's but I just want some clear sound without high levels of interference. BTW, when you say you have 2 Dells it the same problem are you talking about background noise or the crickety thing?
I just got my 5320 yesterday, and I can report that my keyboard on the upper left corner is also coming up not even 1/4 of an inch. It appeared to be stuck on something so I very carefully pushed it down on what it was stuck on, however, there is still a LOT of play in that area.

In Addition, my F8 key gets stuck on a tiny little plastic piece that seems to be holding the keyboard down, It does not inhibit any of the key function, but pressing down on it is not a clean one touch motion, it gets caught then snaps past it in a tiny little "Ki-chik" sound if that makes any sense...

Otherwise, I have not noticed any other problems with the system other than the keyboard. Benchmarks have been as follows:

3dMark05 = 2837 (this is STOCK, I repeat with NO overclocking)
I love it!

BTW has anyone else noticed the HORRID Engrish in the BIOS?

*EDIT* I am having the exact same problem with the headphone jack being high noise and with the crickets

my F8 feels a little differnt than the other function keys but not to bad. The keyboard thing is kind of a disappointment, and the scren is a little less bright/colorful than I had hoped. Performance wise, the machine has been great. No crashes, plays any game I have put in yet at med-high graphics settings and will run smooth with 5-10 programs and browsers running. I bought the machine to find something with the innards to compete with a desktop and still not be a big, fat brick. I still feel that this machine meets/exceeds my needs and standards in performance and style, but may lack some quality in the finished product.

Still having fun with some Warhammer 40k though. Looks pretty impressive with a couple hundred units screaming into battle.

Isnt the cricket thing strange? Never heard that one before and I have worked on IBM, Toshiba and Dell business laptops.
